Colegiata de Roncesvalles, Orreaga-Roncesvalles

4.2
#1 of 9 in Things to do in Orreaga-Roncesvalles
Constructed during the early thirteenth century, Colegiata de Roncesvalles is arguably the finest example of Navarra-style Gothic architecture in Spain. The collegiate church has been a popular starting point for pilgrims traveling to the city of Santiago de Compostela, as it is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Explore the church’s Gothic and Baroque interior as you wander through the nave and crypt. Admire the large and vibrant stained-glass windows in the Chapel of St. Augustine, which also contains a garden in the courtyard. Be sure to bring your camera in order to capture the hilly countryside surrounding the college and church grounds. • We chose the guided tour and it was a success. You can see the cloister, the tomb of King Sancho, the silo of Charlemagne. The guide was a little monotonous, but the explanation was interesting.

  • There were just the three of us on the bus, all pilgrims who would start at the top of the Pyrenees Mountains in Roncesvalles. Riding with me was Malcolm the Irishman, and Juan, a 30-year-old Spanish ...  more »
  • Something dark inside according to the canons of the time, but in a great state of conservation and maintenance. Worth a visit, and if it is accompanied by a Gregorian chant or a coral that brightens the visit we are the perfect place for a moment of relaxation.

  • We had the Pilgrim menu that we purchased tickets for at the Roncesvalles Albergue. It was 10€ for the meal which consisted of a spiced broth (maybe soup), some pasta, baked chicken or fish with French fries, plain yogurt for dessert, and of course bread. Oh and there was one bottle of wine for every 5 people. As pilgrims menus go so far out was fine, enough food that tasted ok but was nothing special.
  • Good food for a very low price to strengthen the Pilgrims who are going to start their Camino de Santiago. The service staff though could smile a bit.
  • Well located small hotel, perfect for your first night on the camino if the Albergue is full.
  • Very nice looking hotel and obviously a much more peaceful place to sleep. If only I had ventured in to take a room instead of just looking. I did not sleep a wink in the Albergue.
  • This place was prearranged be the only hostel in town. It worked on a collegial way; providing an opportunity to meet fellow peligrims on The Way of Compostela. The menu was a basic menu and unavoidable if one walked from St Jean Pied de Port..
