(4.5/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Constructed during the early thirteenth century, Colegiata de Roncesvalles is arguably the finest example of Navarra-style Gothic architecture in Spain. The collegiate church has been a popular starting point for pilgrims traveling to the city of Santiago de Compostela, as it is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Explore the church’s Gothic and Baroque interior as you wander through the nave and crypt. Admire the large and vibrant stained-glass windows in the Chapel of St. Augustine, which also contains a garden in the courtyard. Be sure to bring your camera in order to capture the hilly countryside surrounding the college and church grounds. • Despite many additions and changes over the centuries, the integrity of the medieval buildings has been respected. 1 / Iglesia de Santa Maria la Real. Step on the "camino", located not far from the site of the famous battle in 778 where the rearguard of Charlemagne's army was defeated by the Vascons, and during which Roland lost his life. The collegiate church, founded by Alfonso Ier the fighter, still retains its original character of hospital institutions hosting throughout the year thousands of pilgrims travelling to Compostela. The work of the College were initiated to 1209, in a Gothic style, and according to the model of Notre-Dame-de-Paris. It rises on a plan with three naves: the Central, closed by a pentagonal apse, is twice as wide as the collateral and each is divided into five spans. Outside: beautiful portal. Inside: many windows at the characters and numerous rosettes; episcopal Tomb; ARC triumphal chorus with a beautiful Virgin and child surrounded by angels, ex-porte-candle; altar and altarpiece of St. James; reliefs; statue in wood of the Madonna and child, which has been reported from Toulouse in the 14th century and which only hands and faces are not covered with money. A place of great spirituality despite the uninterrupted flow, but without the crowds of pilgrims and visitors, as well as the curious. 2 / Chapel of St.-Agustin. Tomb of King Sancho VII the strong. The old Chapter Hall Square, houses the tomb of King Sancho VII the strong. The slab that covers it, from the 13th century, shows a recumbent figure whose size suggests the high and mighty stature of the monarch. The room is lit by a stained glass window (early 20th century) which illustrates the victory won by the King on the Almohads at the battle of Navas of Tolosa in 1212, source the masses of weapons and chains taken by troops of the Caliph Muhammad Nasir year (Christians as practical). Tradition has it that these channels are those represented on the coat of arms of Navarre. 3 / the Gothic cloister of origin being collapsed under the weight of snow in the year 1600, it was replaced by that of Cistercian style that can be seen today. It dates back to the 17th century, so probably rebuilt fairly quickly after the destruction of the previous one. Classified as good of Cultural interest of Navarre since March 22, 1993.

  • The collegiate church is worth visiting, especially if you are going to start in Roncesvalles Camino de Santiago. If so the mass of pilgrims in several languages with pilgrims from all over the world is a sublime and unforgettable experience.

  • Etapa imprescindible del Camino de Santiago
  • Roncesvalles is long and tiring after a first stage arrives from France, from Saint Jean Pied de Port, stepping over the Pyrenees. Downloaded the backpack after doing the formalities for the reception at the hostel just outside to visit the town, a little amazed at the size of the place. The entrance into the Colegiata becomes a viaticum for the path ahead, hence almost 800 kilometers to get to Santiago de Compostela. The atmosphere of peace and serenity that pervades the Church helps to forget fatigue just born and allows you to own tempo on what you can expect in the days ahead. A necessary moment of meditation before flying out with the right motivation.

  • First stop. Ideal for pilgrims. History, architecture, moods, thoughts, dating. A place to which get fatigued sharing regenerated. Abbiamone respect.

  • Roncesvalles, an ideal place to rest the mind and the spirit, and that tells us his past, full of future. The story of Roland, brand goals and human types who left an indelible imprint on Western Christianity, and today is proposed as a model to follow, in our days.
