  • We have made a path by Oñati from the Edurne guide tourist information centre. It has been great. He taught us the inside of the University, the Church, palaces, all explained with detail, sympathy, great kindness and information useful for more things on our own. It was a route from 18 h in December, so in the dark had a special charm. For less money, a great visit! Eskerrik asko, Edurne. Long live the Txantxikus!

  • Very nice building from the 14th century, which housed the University created by the Bishop Rodrigo Mercado of Zuazola convinced until 1901 that the inhabitants of the Basque lands had a special aptitude for the letters. It taught theology, guns, law and medicine. Currently there are sheltered the Basque public administration Institute, the historic Archive of protocols of Gipuzkoa and the National Institute of legal sociology of Oñati. The building is notable for its extremely worked and decorated by the sculptor Piarres Picart facades. The iconography of the façade was supposed to show the student values, both of Christianity from paganism.

  • To reach Oñate with the idea of the visit of the University, was a shame and a disappointment check was closed and we could not see it on the inside. We had to comply with take a walk around the outside of the building and admire the extraordinary plateresque facade which alone is reason to go to this beautiful town in the province of Gipuzkoa. It is undoubtedly the most important building of Oñate and one of the oldest universities in Spain. The work of numerous stonemasons and sculptors who participated in the elaboration of the decorations of the facade, is extraordinary and makes that you have to look in innumerable details, both of which are inspired by the divine in the profane, the mixture is very attractive . The iconography of facade aimed to show the values of Christianity and paganism. It is beautiful and stands out on the façade, the great coat of arms of the King Carlos I and V of Germany, who was patron of the University, the first of the Basque country, which lectured is for three centuries. Today, it is the seat of the protocols file of Gipuzkoa, the Basque Institute of public administration and the International Institute of legal sociology. We had to settle for what we saw, knowing that the interior is worth much. Mudejar craft made with oak wood is magnificent and little seen in the Basque country and the Renaissance cloister, two floors linked by two ladders with six arches on the narrow side and seven on the width, is the highlight of the University. None of these two wonders could see in our stay in the village. If you are sightseeing Oñate, to see the University approach is essential things that must be done, if only to see the facade of the building (by the way, I think that you can book tours online). Greetings to all travelers.
