Palacio Real de Olite, Olite

4.6
The Palace of the Kings of Navarre of Olite or Royal Palace of Olite is a castle-palace in the town of Olite, in Navarre, Spain. It was one of the seats of the Court of the Kingdom of Navarre, since the reign of Charles III "the Noble" until its conquest by Castile (1512).

Surely there is no king with a more beautiful castle or palace and with so many gilded rooms (...) it could not say or even could imagine how magnificent and sumptuous is this palace (...)

This monument was quite damaged (except the church) in 1813 by a fire caused by general Espoz y Mina during the Napoleonic French Invasion with the aim of that was not occupied by French troops. It was largely restored from 1937 in works that lasted for 30 years giving it back its original appearance. Nevertheless, miscellaneous architectural decoration of its interior, and the outside gardens, were lost.

  • 3 stars for historical details that explain the significance of the individuals who ruled from that palace. 5 stars for overall entertainment value. The ability to climb up to the top of at least 6 towers with amazing views over the country side and walk along the ramparts of the castle was great.
  • An interesting place for a visit. Stunning views from the towers but not suitable for those with limited mobility, lots of stairs. Olite itself has a good selection of bars and cafes around the main square. Interesting alley ways to explore. Allow half day.
  • Lovely palace to visit and get breath taking views after climbing several towers. Definetly worth the visit.
  • Access to 90% of the palace, great views of olite, some restoration taking place so will only get better
  • I have visited it about 3 times due to friends coming over to Navarra and I have to say that still amazes me. It is completely restored, but you still can see in the museum how was before it was. You can access all of the towers and observe the amazing views of the surroundings. They recommend about 1 hour to make the visit, but if you go a bit quicker you can easily do it in 30/40 minutes. As a negative point, the flag should be changed, it is completely broken giving a very poor image when you are on top.
