(4.8/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
The Sierra de Gredos is a mountain range in central Spain that spans the provinces of Ávila, Salamanca, Cáceres, Madrid, and Toledo. It is part of the much larger Central System of mountain ranges. Its highest point is Pico Almanzor, at 2,592 metres and it has been declared a natural park by the Autonomous Community of Castile and León. The Sierra de Gredos is one of the most extensive mountain ranges of the Central System; it comprises five river valleys: the Alto Tormes, the Alto Alberche, the Tiétar Oriental, the Tiétar Occidental y la Vera, and the Valle del Ambroz. The first known inhabitants were the Vettones, a pre-Roman Celtic people. The central part of the range encomprises the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park.GeologyThe Sierra de Gredos comprises mainly granite, which is a common type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock which is granular and phaneritic in texture. This rock consists mainly of quartz, mica, and feldspar. In some Gredos rocks the feldspar crystals are especially large, attaining a size of several centimeters in some cases. There is also some granodiorite and outcrops of metamorphic rocks.

  • It is an accessible route of knowledgable medium or high depending on the time of year that is made. In my case, in April, there was still snow, so the road was cut in half of the route. In times of nevada should be well equipped for this purpose. The route lasts about 5 hours with 6.5 km trip and many others back. Well-signposted route, annoying, paved way for joints in some sections. Access in hoyos del Espino to the place called the platform. €2.5 per vehicle.

  • The Regional Park of the Sierra de Gredos covers a considerable extension South of Ávila, since practically Navarrevisca to Tornavacas and the sierra de Candelario. Its towering peaks are the highest in the Central system, reaching up to 2592 m in Pico Almanzor, and that is the reason why in a lot of kilometers, there are no roads crossing it from North to South. Between the N-502 East (port of the peak) and the N-110 to the West (Puerto de Castilla) there are only old trade routes that ran on the backs of horses, as the trail from the port of Candeleda. The best known and most frequented, is undoubtedly ascension from the Gredos platform until the Circo de Gredos and its surroundings: the Royal trail that leads to the circus of the five lakes, until the peak of the Mira road crests, etc. And also the Ascension to Los Galayos from the walnut of the ravine to the South, the rise from Hoyos del Espino, etc. But I encourage you to know not only the most frequented routes, but the less traveled, as the ascent to the port of the pawn, the trail from the port of Candeleda, ascension by the throat of Santa Maria, etc, etc. Ascents from the South are much harder that you levelled up to the watershed crest of waters from the North, having to save stronger. As a sample, a button. The Gredos platform is nearly 1800 m of altitude, while the walnut of the ravine is only 1100 m. So if you do the routes from the South you take with a quadriceps as the Swarchzenegger. Even so, the effort is worthwhile

  • In Gredos you can make many routes. The last that we have done has been the ascension to the sight convents, totally nevada. A luxury that we will not forget in many years.
