The visit to the Museum perfectly complements the tour of the Cathedral of Murcia, further into the past with its original gothic cloisters (which preserve part of the frescoes that covered its walls) and the ruins of the mosque which was built. Also excellent examples of Gothic painting (Bernabé, Modena), Renaissance (Hernando de Llanos) and Baroque (Lucas Jordán) can be seen, as well as 3 maravilllosas sizes of the murcian school teacher Francisco Salzillo, probably most prominent Spanish religious sculptor of the 18th century.

The suspended glass floor exposing the sub-floor and older foundations, at the entrance, caused a few people to turn back but well worth persevering. The exhibits were lovely and I particularly enjoye...  more »

Inaugurated in 1956, and then, after deep transformations, again in 2007, the Museum is housed in the Chapter Hall and part of the old cloister of the Cathedral. On the ground floor, are notable: Roman stone sarcophagus (2nd century BC) reused in 1522 to house the remains of Gil Rodríguez de Junteron who was the Court of Pope Jules II; altarpiece of St. Michael (Gothic); altarpiece of Barnaba da Modena (14th); Moorish Bell. Upstairs, are noticing: Virgin and the Adoration of the shepherds, the work of Fernando de Llanos (1516); bust-reliquary of Saint Priscillien; Statue of St. Jerome penitent by the sculptor Salzillo. Also: many pieces of liturgical and religious silverwork, beautiful statuary. Be sure to notice items to murals restored on the vaults and arches, as well as the glass walkways, archaeological remains discovered during the work and left in situ. A must see.

  • Enjoyed our visit to the museum. Fine art works, stunning sculptures and great addition after visiting the marvelous cathedral itself.
  • If you go through the Cathedral of Murcia, you can not miss the Cathedral Museum, which allows you to delve further into the past of the same since preserves part of its original gothic cloisters (including some of the frescoes that covered its walls) and the ruins of the mosque which was built. You can see also excellent examples of Gothic painting (Bernabé, Modena), Renaissance (Hernando de Llanos) and Baroque (Lucas Jordán), as well as 3 wonderful carvings of the murcian school teacher Francisco Salzillo, probably the most prominent Spanish religious sculptor of 18th-century (just see his sculpture of St. Jerome, which transmits the feeling and the pain of this father of the Church You can be almost feel tension in your muscles and feel chest hit the stone that is martirizaba, even the hematoma in that area it is faithfully represented).
