  • A beautiful church on a hill, dedicated to the patron of the town, La Virgen de la Cabeza. Make sure to see her behind the altar.
  • IMPRESSIVE a crafts sanctuary care to detail. Each of its corners exudes art, but without doubt the Chamber of the Virgin is the most impressive temple. On the right side of the altar there is a purse where you can deposit a euro and removed the front of the camera, offering different shades of light that allow admire the beauty of it and make some very nice pictures. The man who is responsible for the care of the Sanctuary has it impeccable and you many details of the place. It is a very kind person.

  • Raised on the ruins of a Moorish castillejo which was residence of the Queen Aixa Alhorra, mother of Boabdil, the temple began to build in 1631, according to the project of Isidro de la Chica, with Latin cross plan and a single nave. Partially destroyed during the Civil War, it was restored in the second third of the twentieth century respecting the ancient structure. The restoration was completed in the 1960s by adding the Christian sculptor Manuel González Ligero altarpiece, which synthesises the values of the motrilena tradition with respect to the legend and cult of the Virgen de la Cabeza, patron saint of the city.

  • Beautiful inside and out. A must-see even if they do not attend mass or is Catholic. And then some tapas bars nearby.

  • To the South of Motril, on a picturesque, isolated hill which overlooks the population, the vega and the sea, stands the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, patron saint of this city. At Muslim time crowned the Summit of this small mountain a castle called Qalat - al - Xaiar, where legend has it that resided seasonally the Horra Queen Cefi Fatima, daughter of the Nasrid King Muhammad IX Southpaw, Abu - Hasan spouse and mother of the last Muslim King Boabdil of Granada. This fortress was sent down by order of the Catholic Monarchs in 1499 in the eventuality of a Moorish uprising. The Hermitage built in that place we have very little data, we only know that it was a building of rectangular, very small, simple and built with materials from the demolition of the Castle. This chapel was the Virgin and was given his cult for over a hundred years, until in 1613 the Franciscans founded their convent in it, giving them the Council building, pictures and ornaments, authorizing the expansion of the existing temple to the old foundation of the castle which was on the South side of the Hill and of the slope from the Hermitage to the old foundation of the fortress on the West side. The works of the new convent lasted until 1. 615, year in which the Franciscans there moved. Nor do we know how it was architecturally this new Franciscan convent, but soon it should remain small, since the order decided to build a new one to the West of the town, convent and church that concluded about 1. 630.
