Montserrat Monastery, Montserrat

(4.6/5 based on 5,500+ reviews on the web)
A Benedictine abbey perched on the craggy rock face of Montserrat mountain, Montserrat Monastery serves as one of Catalonia's most important spiritual sites. Alongside the basilica and monastery, the grounds also feature a sanctuary famous for hosting the image of the patron saint of Catalonia, Our Lady of Montserrat. Featuring grand Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the basilica is a work of art in itself, but also houses a museum with paintings and sculptures from the likes of Picasso, El Greco, and Dali. If you're comfortable with heights, make the trip by cable car for superb views of the mountain and surrounding area.
