Castillo de la Mota, Medina del Campo
(4.5/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
The Castle of the La Mota or Castillo de La Mota is a reconstructed medieval fortress, located in the town of Medina del Campo, province of Valladolid, Spain. It is so named because of its location on an elevated hill, a mota(in Spanish), from where it dominates the town and surrounding land. The adjacent town came to be surrounded by an expanding series of walls in subsequent years, of which little remains. It has been protected by the state since 1904, first as a national monument and more recently as a site of cultural interest, or Bien de Interés Cultural. The castle itself was reconstructed in the twentieth century. Reconstruction was mainly pursued by the Falange government of Francisco Franco, who had a nostalgia for structures having links to the Catholic Monarchs.OverviewThe castle's main feature is the large outer barbican. The interior castle has a trapezoidal plan, with 4 towers and a square yard. It has a large square keep tower, and an inner curtain wall that was used for archers. The castle was originally accessed through a drawbridge. It is made from local red brick, utlilizing stone only for some details.

  • A very interesting tour by one of the best restored monument and with much history ancient and contemporary. The Guide Beatriz, a young but very professional and knowledgeable person. Do not fail to do the dramatized visit of the tower and that Yes, no I presenteis without reservation as possible that there are no entries. The visitor center staff is very attentive and you advise on the best plans visits to the Castle and Medina del Campo. .

  • We were on Saturday, December 4, entry is €6 and includes an audio guide that you have to ask at the box office, it has a very interesting tour. It will take you a couple of hours to do so. There are also guided tours but we saw them leave because information not they offered them us.

  • In this castle, we can remember a part of the story, his tour is the best since they teach you all the parts of the Castle, including all the subways and we can see the city from the more height of the tower.

  • History at its best! One is really transported to medieval times.
  • The definition of a fortress. The audio tour is acceptable, but the castle itself is the greatest I've seen since Pierrefonds.
  • Slow organization. Very limited visit. The tours are limited and only upon reservation. The room of the thing has no interest. The poorly lit Chapel. The place has more potential, but everything appears to be closed to the public.

  • It is an imposing Castle. There is a great view of the town. You can stroll through the ground floor and learn a little of its history with pictures and videos

  • Most emblematic monument of the village of Medina. It is worth visiting it. Although its reform was necessary, some of the changes that have been made (e.g. to remove the pit) has made it lose its essence.
