The Castle of the La Mota or Castillo de La Mota is a reconstructed medieval fortress, located in the town of Medina del Campo, province of Valladolid, Spain. It is so named because of its location on an elevated hill, a mota(in Spanish), from where it dominates the town and surrounding land. The adjacent town came to be surrounded by an expanding series of walls in subsequent years, of which little remains. It has been protected by the state since 1904, first as a national monument and more recently as a site of cultural interest, or Bien de Interés Cultural. The castle itself was reconstructed in the twentieth century. Reconstruction was mainly pursued by the Falange government of Francisco Franco, who had a nostalgia for structures having links to the Catholic Monarchs.OverviewThe castle's main feature is the large outer barbican. The interior castle has a trapezoidal plan, with 4 towers and a square yard. It has a large square keep tower, and an inner curtain wall that was used for archers. The castle was originally accessed through a drawbridge. It is made from local red brick, utlilizing stone only for some details.

  • We visited the castle with the complete guided tour that includes a visit to the fields, walls, Castle and the Torre del homenaje. The price of the entrance joint is of 6€, but can have a price special if you are retired, unemployed, family numerous... A very nice guide explains the history of the sites and of the castle during 2 h. Especially found me very interesting the explanation about the fortification and defense of the Castle and. The visit by the underground galleries. Already inside the Castle, we see that it is rebuilt being currently used by the Junta de Castilla y León to conventions, conferences and lectures. The entry on is can be free zone. The visit ends with the rise to the Tower, not suitable for all audiences by its high steps. Along the way we see some decorated stay period. The views from the top of the Tower shows us a great perspective in Medina del Campo. It is an interesting visit that I recommend above all by the defensive and military issue. And of course, by stepping on the same land where he was Juana, the insane and Isabel. The hours for the complete tour is in the morning at 12 and in the afternoon at 4 pm.

  • History at its best! One is really transported to medieval times.
  • The definition of a fortress. The audio tour is acceptable, but the castle itself is the greatest I've seen since Pierrefonds.
  • I recommend the dramatized visit to the tower. Hilarious! Especially recommended if you go with children.

  • A really impressive castle. Under the visitor reception centre there are also preserved remains of a pre-Roman settlement curious. Guided tours are worth, the guides are wonderful.
