Canal de Castilla, Medina de Rioseco
(3.6/5 based on 85+ reviews on the web)
The Canal of Castile is a canal in the north of Spain. Constructed during the last half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century, it runs through the provinces of Burgos, Palencia and Valladolid, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is one of the country's few canals. It was built to ease the wheat grain transport from Castile to the northern harbours and to other markets from there. However, when railroads were built in northern Spain in the nineteenth century, the canal turned into the spine of a huge irrigation system due to its relative inefficiency as a means of transport. The locks on the canal were decommissioned in the twentieth century. Similar to an inverted 'Y' in layout, the canal stretches 207km, linking the towns of Alar del Rey, considered the beginning of the Northern Branch, Valladolid and Medina de Rioseco, lying at the end of the Southern Branch and Campos Branch respectively.EcologyThe countryside crossed by the canal is of interest for its birdlife. In the Tierra de Campos there are two large Special Protection Areas.

  • It is interesting to make a boat ride in the middle of the cereal-producing typical Castilian countryside. The banks of the Canal are lined with trees that, in mid-October which is when we visited it, have their leaves with a very beautiful colors. During the journey, as well as up and down a sluice-gate, they explained the reasons that led to build the Canal, and its current use.

  • We have done the travel of 2:30 h by boat from the sluice, where is level-up to turn the boat. For children is recommended over 1 h travel because that becomes a bit boring. It landscape is beautiful to the channel you surround trees, and there is a trail next to the same, that allows walking or touring it in montainbike. In my opinion the fruit boat information is poorly publicized, since they do not specify that travel makes hourly output if the long or the short. The tasting you can hire is low, does not deserve the pena.para enjoy the landscape ideal is to mount front.

  • A journey to the past and the history. It was super interesting boat trip, see how to operate the locks. Remember that there have been large projects in Spain, that although today they are not necessary, not for this reason, are less interesting.

  • No claims beyond the traditional. Correct in quality and price. Very little professionalism of staff. A penalty.
