Palmitos Park, Maspalomas

4.3
#2 of 7 in Zoos & Aquariums in Canary Islands
Packed with exotic plants and animals, Palmitos Park is a 20 hectare (49 acre) botanic garden and aviary located just a short drive from the island’s popular beaches. The big appeal of this park is its great wealth of cacti and succulents, with over 160 different cactus types and nearly 1,000 palm trees of 42 varieties. The park houses over 1,500 exotic birds, representing about 230 different species. Hummingbirds, swans, ducks, parrots, crocodiles, and monkeys may be the park’s most popular residents, but you can also choose to visit the aquarium, noted for its large fish and coral displays and daily dolphin shows. This park is also home to Europe’s biggest butterfly house. As you near the exit, visit the park’s souvenir shop. I went to Palmitos Park with my family was intrigued by Europe's largest Butterfly House! That disappointment will be big but with four butterflies placed in cross ... a red herring! As well as the Orchid House ... I could do it myself!! In fact I would have been better. The monkeys are in a tiny cage forced to make the same journey for eternity! I did not give zero thanks to dolphin did well and which reveals lots of love on the part of trainers as well as that of the parrots.

  • Fantastic family day out. All three of my children (and the wife!) enjoyed it. Money well spent and while there isn't a huge variety of animals there, the ones that are seem to be quite happy and well looked after. Dolphin show gets a lot of attention but the parrot show is worth a watch for sure!
  • Don't miss the shows. Very good. Bus timetables are a bit confusing and busses are often full so they don't stop at the pickup. Take a taxi.
  • Nice Park with some good shows. The dolphin photography proposal for euros is quite disturbing and isn't animal welfare. The restaurants are really expensive.
  • Beautiful zoo in the mountains. Get to be close to the animals. Amazing animal shows.
  • Please do not under any circumstances visit here if you are using a wheelchair, certainly not a manual one. My partner and I visited while on holiday as we were told the park was on the level, NO IT MOST DEFINITELY IS NOT, the hills are awful, a member of the pupil had to assist me to push chair up hills they are so bad. We came down a small hill which was very scary but unfortunately when we attempted a larger hill down the wheelchair went far to fast resulting in me falling and my partner in her wheelchair rolling down hill herself, thankfully she managed to get the brakes on but in doing so she threw herself out of the wheelchair. A visit to hospital later and we find out she has fractured her shoulder and is now in a sling. We went mainly to see the dolphin show but sadly never saw any of the dolphins. For us it was an expensive day out but not an enjoyable one.
