Mercado Central de Atarazanas, Malaga

4.5
#1 of 18 in Shopping in Malaga
Pick up fresh ingredients alongside locals at Mercado Central de Atarazanas. Find this traditional market inside a 19th-century building built on the site of the ancient Moorish Atarazanas, or boatyard. Admire ornate stained-glass pieces depicting local history and monuments, as well as the original Moorish gate to the city incorporated into the building. Under the stately ironwork and glass roof, browse the stalls for local produce, artisan cheeses, meats, and of course fresh Mediterrean seafood. Be sure to arrive before 1 pm, when the merchants begin packing up for the day. Use our Malaga trip planner to add Mercado Central de Atarazanas and other attractions to your Malaga vacation plans.

  • Yes here also a covered market with fresh produce. To an outside possibility snacks to eat or drink. In Malaga there are two of these halls. This we found the best. Best cozy.

  • Traditional market of exquisite beauty, with stalls of fruit, meat, fish and other typical spices. Very good prices and excellent quality of products. With the possibility of tapas there very fresh. Very highly recommended.

  • The old market building is divided into 3 large halls. One with meat, one with fresh fish and one with fresh fruits and vegetables. A large stained glass window adorns the entrance. An abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables. You should really agree. Open up to 14 hours. Enjoy the delicious tapas in the small bars in the market Hall.

  • Fantastic range of food. It all looked lovely. Unfortunately I'm staying in an hotel so no place to cook!
  • We were there only last week and bought some fruit and veg. Once home we had to throw out nearly 2 kilos of cucumbers which were nearly all yellow. That we didn't notice as it was weighed with the bag hidden from our view. A lot of the fruit didn't even last 2 days. We had to throw half of the figs, apples and oranges were all dry inside. We were swayed by all the good reviews but a lot of the stuff there were just not fresh. Very disappointed as this happened only first time to us in Spain and we always go to fresh food markets rather than supermarket. Not happy...
  • Crowded at times, but also a great place to visit during a trip to Malaga. Local specialities, tapas bars, fresh and relatively low prices. Compare prices on various stands before actually shopping - the difference can be as much as quarter of the price between various stands.
  • Nice place and building. It is a market to get everything. Even bars to take tapas
  • The most amazing market for fresh produce - meat fish veg cheese seafood deli. All fresh as can be with friendly helpful vendors. Get there early for the best choice

Where to stay in Malaga

For a chance to experience the heart of the city center, you will want to stay in the area surrounding Calle Larios and Alameda Principal. This constitutes the commercial shopping district of the city and is a convenient walk to the city's main attractions and beaches. Another option is the historical city center, where an array of lively tapas bars and shops intermix with the dramatic Gothic architecture. For a true beach vacation, choose to stay in one of the hotels lining the city beach where you can soak up views of the beautiful Costa Dorada away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
