Carmen Thyssen Museum, Malaga

4.1
Delve into 19th-century Spanish art at Carmen Thyssen Museum. Housed in a converted 16th-century Baroque palace, the museum features a permanent collection of works, from landscapes to portraits, done by predominantly Andalusian painters. For an interesting perspective on the development and culture of southern Spain, admire well-known pieces such as Plá’s “Ladies in the Garden” or “La Buenaventura” by Romero de Torres. Stop for a coffee and pastry at the museum’s palace cafe before leaving. • Locks up better among the many museums that have recently seen the light in Malaga, its collection is this museum very vast and the best teachers of Spanish painting, with an outstanding and well-deserved place for the Andalusian teachers are present! Building of architectural interest in central position a few steps from the Plaza de la Constitucion. Free Sundays from 4!

  • I'm glad I went during the free Sunday entrance. I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if I paid money to enter. You should visit, but without high expectations. Art is subjective to the audience and personally, I was impartial to the works featured in this museum. I much more preferred those showcased at the Centre Pompidou. There will be a wait outside when you attend on the free entrance Sundays, about a 15 minute wait for me. The museum is clean and bright.
  • Very interesting introduction to spanish painting, known as wel as uknown to me. Higly reccomended.
  • This is a good sized museum in that it's not too big or small. Easy to stroll through and get your fill of art without getting bored. I especially enjoyed the impressionism floor.
  • 6€ / 2 floors to visit ! I was very disappointed some rooms are empty at the first floor. Very small collection.
  • This place is super clean and free on Sundays after 17:00. I won't pretend to know much of the Art here, but the layout if comfortable and pedestrian flow is limited at the entrance so no room is ever crowded. There is good supporting history and context for the art on walls of the exhibits english and spanish.

Where to stay in Malaga

For a chance to experience the heart of the city center, you will want to stay in the area surrounding Calle Larios and Alameda Principal. This constitutes the commercial shopping district of the city and is a convenient walk to the city's main attractions and beaches. Another option is the historical city center, where an array of lively tapas bars and shops intermix with the dramatic Gothic architecture. For a true beach vacation, choose to stay in one of the hotels lining the city beach where you can soak up views of the beautiful Costa Dorada away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
