Monument
Stand under the high, granite arches of Puerta de Alcalá, one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. Built by Carlos III in 1778, the gate stands at 19.5 m (64 ft) and features elegant Baroque architecture adorned with decorative carvings. Look for the lion’s head that hangs above each of the three arches. Stand back to admire the statues on top of the gate representing the four cardinal virtues. • Rather than by its construction, style neo-classical, rather than by its location, at the roundabout of the plaza of independence that connects several streets, it is history that keeps this old building that dates from 1769, and which has been repeatedly restored. It is one of the five Royal doors that gave access to the city of Madrid.

  • The Puerta de Alcalá stands in the east of the city. It is in the middle of Calle de Alcalá, one of the oldest streets in Madrid, and which runs from the Puerta del Sol in the city centre outwards to the town of Alcalá de Henares, lying to the northeast of the city. The gate has a large central semicircular topped arch, flanked by two similar arches. They are in turn flanked by two square lintelled gates, five in all. It is one the important landmarks in Madrid, and is located near to Plaza de Cibeles.
  • At night Puerta de Alcalá is one of better sights in city. A beautiful architecture with small statues on top of it. This is the first modern post-roman triumphal arch built in Europe.
  • An iconic monument of Madrid right by one of the many entrances of Parque del Retiro. The gate has two different sides, one with sculptures of soldiers and another one with sculptures of cherubs. During spring and summer the gate is adorned with flowers, totally worth the walk to snap a photo!
  • It's a pretty door... There are a lot of them around the city but this one is the most central.
  • A must while visiting madrid. There are some scratchs from the spanish civil war (1936-1939)
