Stand under the high, granite arches of Puerta de Alcalá, one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. Built by Carlos III in 1778, the gate stands at 19.5 m (64 ft) and features elegant Baroque architecture adorned with decorative carvings. Look for the lion’s head that hangs above each of the three arches. Stand back to admire the statues on top of the gate representing the four cardinal virtues. • We could say that next to the bear and the Madroño, of the Puerta del Sol, the Puerta de Alcalá is another symbol of Madrid. It is the gate of the wall that gave access to the path of Alcalá de Henares, hence its name. It is located next to the garden of the Buen Retiro, La Cibeles and the Salamanca area.
