Monument Landmark
Stand under the high, granite arches of Puerta de Alcalá, one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. Built by Carlos III in 1778, the gate stands at 19.5 m (64 ft) and features elegant Baroque architecture adorned with decorative carvings. Look for the lion’s head that hangs above each of the three arches. Stand back to admire the statues on top of the gate representing the four cardinal virtues. Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.

  • Lovely monument. Attracts a lot of tourists. Definitely a must-see if you plan your trip to Madrid when walking through the streets.
  • A really nice entrance way that is quite picturesque. It is too bad that you cannot see it close up or that there did not seem to be any plaques explaining it's building and history, but nice to have pictures without a lot of people around it.
  • One of the original gates to the city. Have your taxi driver take a quick spin around the traffic circle to get a good view. Impressive, but a slow look is all that is necessary.
  • Awesome spot! Really great arch in Madrid! Right next to the Parque de El Retiro! Great architecture, definitely worth visiting in my opinion especially if you're next to the park!
  • Loved it! Reminded me of the song from my childhood, La Puerta de Alcala! It was fun seeing people singing the song in front of it across Parque del Retiro.
