Puerta de Alcala, Madrid

#23 of 1,339 in Things to do in Madrid
Stand under the high, granite arches of Puerta de Alcala, one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. Built by Carlos III in 1778, the gate stands at 19.5 m (64 ft) and features elegant Baroque architecture adorned with decorative carvings. Look for the lion’s head that hangs above each of the three arches. Stand back to admire the statues on top of the gate representing the four cardinal virtues. • As it says the song that so aptly interpreted that couple of singers, who was pleased to dedicate to the Puerta de Alcalá. Acreeedor times that I've been through the same and you can always find a detail to highlight, appears now embellished for that pink carpet of flowers that are at his feet. In the month of August, when it loosens the traffic is and especially at dawn, when you can have a good photo, without the inseperable Pik it settled the last century.

  • I was surprised at how much was going on at the park. Lots of cafes, people, monuments, boats on the lake. We enjoyed a stroll around the lake.  more »
  • Has little to visit, it's beautiful but this located on a roundabout, which makes it impossible to be near her.

  • I love it. A must see for anyone. Also the surrondings (Retiro park) are amazing
  • I love waking through this park. It's massive. Take a drink and get lost. Also a nice place to have a picnic.
  • Can't say much about this place. Just passed it by while walking to other places. Big arch, lots of traffic, and a number of restaurants looking over the same.
  • Important monument in the center. Nice variety of places to stop and have a snack, the Retiro Park is right next door.
  • Lovely monument!! 😍 miralá, miralá, miralá miralááá... 🎶

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
