Plaza de Oriente, Madrid

#25 of 1,327 in Things to do in Madrid
Admire the grandiosity of Madrid’s Royal Palace from Plaza de Oriente. The plaza consists of three gardens, beautifully landscaped with dozens of plant varieties and lined with limestone statues of the 20 Gothic kings of the early Christian kingdom. Wander through the Baroque-inspired central gardens to see the monument of King Philip IV. Stop at one of the many garden cafes to sit and have coffee while enjoying the impressive backdrop of the palace and gardens. • I honestly don't know why this is not Madrids top ranked Plaza it is that beautiful. I suppose it's because it does not have shops lining it or restaurants that flank it with outdoor diners. It might ...  more »

  • Excellent designed Plaza, but the amount of dust flying around can be a high risk for your heath. Note: Not only here but in every park I visited in Madrid, Spaniards love to enrich the path ways in their parks with those fine sticky sands that in summer and the time of the year like this (I was in Madrid in October) will easily fly in the air and stick to your shoes and make your fashion trainers look garbage. Probably I could say this because I'm living in London where there are many parks around without his problems.
  • A very nice place for something like this. A nice area, well kept and has a heart to the place. Conclusion: As far as these places go this is the best one I’ve been to in Spain (so far).
  • Beautiful centerpoint area to look at history and take pictures. This is where the sun beams and shows the monuments so well. Focal point of a lot of hotels here
  • A nice place to chill out near the Royal Palace. There aren't many benches though
  • Cute place. Worth a visit if you are strolling around town.

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
