Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.

  • Not one of the most famous museums in the Madrid and definitely not a museum you’ll find in your Lonely Planet, but the great news is . . . this museum is always free! Yes, every day of the week and i...  more »

  • Not so much a museum as it is a book store. Which by itself is amazing. It is the largest selection of design books I've seen in one place. Very interesting stuff from all over the world with beautiful design. The building is also fantastic. The metal panel facade is striking and the underlit floor modules are really cool looking at night. They gate off the courtyard when it gets dark though. The museum is not exceptionally inspiring, but you should still go up to the second level to walk through the connector.
  • Cute little museum in a neighbourhood full of life and cafes and bars. FREE entry, donation based. Nice gift shop with lots of books and trinkets. Would recommend! Only takes about an hour max to see it all, completely in Spanish though!
  • Free Museum featuring Illustration work as well as some digital work. As of May 17, the top floor was Alfredo González Sánchez, with the bottom two floors being for Ana Juan. Reader be warned, everything is in Spanish.
  • A very nice addition to the neighbourhood. Smart museum design allows you to enjoy the exhibit, the building and the museum shop in about an hour. Free entry. Would recommend.
