Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.

  • Market with second hand, vintage products but also new designs and very interesting stuff for gifts. Perfect to visit on a nice day and have lunch at the food stands.
  • This place is full of fun things! You can buy bowties, home decor, delicious cheese or you can just sit and have a coffee. They have food stands, a second-hand market. Plus, what's cooler than a browsing around a train museum?
  • Great market with lots of unique items and stalls that vary per month, everything is pretty reasonably priced. There is usually live music playing and a lot of food stands and trucks in the back outside. The only downside is sometimes it gets pretty crowded!
  • Excellent artesenal market held at the train museum in south Madrid. The whole market space is layed out in front of vintage trains and is separated in three long sections (food, kids/home, art) more or less. The products on offer are well priced and very unique. This is the best market that I've been to in Madrid and it runs every second week. At the back of the space is a giant outdoor section serving drinks and food. His is a great (and free!) venue to come down and hang out for a lovely weekend. A could of warnings - this place is extremely popular, expect to wait in very long lines just to get in! It's basically open air so in the winter can be quite chilly - dress warm.
  • There are few flea markets in Madrid, it's not a cultural thing here, and so to me this market is a must. You've also got entrepreneurs selling their wares and lots of great food vendors, I'm a particular fan of the guy that sells goat cheese (queso fresco).
