Madrid Rio, Madrid

4.5
#2 of 24 in Parks in Madrid
Stretch your legs at Madrid Rio, a 10-km (6.2-mi) long park that runs along the banks of the Manzanares River. Set off on one of the many walking and cycling routes, play a round of tennis, or simply laze on the grass. Cool off at the park’s “beach,” where you can bask in a shallow pool or run among streams of water. Children can tire themselves out in one of 17 different play areas. Stroll through the Huerta de la Partida, an orchard restored to its 18th-century splendor, with trees growing almonds, pears, olives, figs, and more. Check what’s going on in the Matadero Madrid, a former slaughterhouse that today hosts a variety of cultural events. There are a number of places to stop for a drink or bite to eat. It's basically a walk with garden areas. It also has some sources. In my opinion if you make a visit to Madrid would not be in the top ten.

Great long river with some nice parks and fountains on the way but it is not very clean. Some might say that this is for wildlife protection. Still great to walk and relax.  more »

Great for a stroll. Giant slides which I enjoy a lot my daughter. Ideal for any type of sport.

  • It's a pleasant place to strol in spring. One can also bring a bike or go juggling. If the weather is nice, have a picnic. There are places to grab something to eat or drink some coffee. In Summer is not that nice for me as Madrid gets really hot.
  • An alternative break from the city that is not El Retiro Park. Nice walking paths with clean and well maintained garden areas to sit and enjoy the sun. There is a skate park and lots of places to grab a drink and food at Matadero. Can get busy at weekends. Only about thirty minute walk from plaza mayor and the center.
  • One of the best green zones within the city. Approximately 5km long, surrounded of playgrounds, skateparks, gym apparatus and other public amenities. Ideal for jogging and runners. Although technically you are allowed to cycle, I wouldn't recommend during the afternoon and the weekends as the park draws big crowds and cycling can be difficult or dangerous.
  • Exactly how parks should be made! very inspirational and friendly. Go there, break the Madrid routine and explore the area, you will love it.
  • Perfect place for running, walking, cycling, rolling skating.... is a long walk along the Manzanares river. A space recover for the city and plenty of people in the green areas and doing sports.

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
