Fuente de Neptuno, Madrid

4.3
#35 of 265 in Sightseeing in Madrid
Fountain Tourist Spot
Fuente de Neptuno is an iconic marble fountain representing Neptune, god of the sea, holding a trident and coiled snake. Walk around the fountain and view the water spouting from the dolphins and other sea animals pulling his chariot, and appreciate the architecture and culture surrounding the sculpture. Finished in 1786, this statue has been used for several political demonstrations, and is also where the victories of Atlético de Madrid Football Club are celebrated. Tip: You don’t need to worry about catching the statue before sunset; some visitors even prefer the lighting of the fountain after dark. Fuente de Neptuno is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Madrid Edition.

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.

  • Like the Plaza de Cibeles, the Fuente de Neptuno is on a traffic circle in the middle of a very busy road. From a distance it doesn't look like much, but upon close examination, it's a very ornate sta...  more »

  • Another one of those stunning fountains in the center of a large roundabout. Like the others you cannot go near it and there does not seem to be any informational plaques but you can get some nice pictures from across the street. It is annoying to walk around as the lights are clearly not set to make it easy for pedestrians, but still a great sight.
  • Beautiful fountain! The only challenge is that it is hard to take photos if it as it is in the center of the boulevard's lanes.
  • Great monument, part of Castellana night show!
  • Kind of stinky... all the fish in it were super lazy!!! 😱
  • This place has nice views and is in a good location, impressive architecture
