The Edificio Grassy is a building located at 1st Gran Vía in Madrid, Spain.ArchitectureSituated just off Calle de Alcalá, at the very beginning of Gran Vía, the Edificio Grassy was built between 1916 and 1917. It was constructed on a triangular piece of land, in the same way as the Edificio Metrópolis next to it. Moreover, its architect Eladio Laredo aimed to achieve an architectural similarity between both of them. This trend was respected to a certain extent along Gran Vía.It comprises two independent buildings, which are joined together by the hall and the patio. Eclectic in its architecture, it boasts a rotunda topped by two superimposed belvederes of Renaissance influence.NowadaysSince 1952 it hosts the upscale Grassy Jeweler's. Its basement also houses a museum of ancient clocks, with remarkable French, German and English items which span from the 16th to the 19th century, conforming an interesting private collection. The facade of the building is well known for its illuminated advertisements about different brands of watches. For the last decades Jaeger-LeCoultre, Audemars Piguet, Piaget and Baume et Mercier have enjoyed a preeminent position, easily distinguishable at the entrance of Gran Vía. Currently the sought-after location is occupied by a Rolex sign.

At the beginning of the Gran Via, next to the Metropolis building, it is somewhat dwarfed beside him. It was designed in 1916 and conceived as a residential building, in eclectic style, very much in vogue during that time in the city. In 1952 the Swiss watchmaker settled in the Alejandro Grassy, opening on the ground floor a high-end timepieces, giving name to the building, since he placed a large poster with his name. At the end of the 1960s he suffered a great restoration, stripping of its facade sculptures, wreaths and the rim of the capital. Inside it houses the Museum of antique clocks, can be visited on a very limited schedule: Thursday at 17.30 hours and Friday at 1145 hours, upon request by appointment on the phone 91 532 10 07. The visit is free.

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
