  • We were attracted by the fun exterior of the shop, and our love for books of course, and finally we might be within 1.5 hours. The owner was very friendly and knew our wonderful books to recommend. The Interior is nice, the music matched and knocked the whole picture! Also the offer was very diverse and, to make a long story short, you should actually really go and admire it yourself!

  • An absolute gem of a bookshop, an amazing selection of books curated by people that appreciate nice editions and great literature, from 5 euro paperbacks to first editions of Naked Lunch it's got something for both the casual browser and the serious collector... Also the staff are delightful, kind people who offer you tea and are happy to have a chat at length when they have time. I will be back!
  • How could I not give Desperate Literature 5-Stars?! This amazing little bookstore is a must-see if ever in the area. It is not only a collector's dream but the average reader will surely find herself engrossed. Charlotte and Terry are warm and helpful and the passion they have for books clearly comes through when you converse with them and just seeing how they've designed the layout of the store makes you want to stay all day and night. They've put a different spin to this bookstore by offering a shot of Whiskey with the purchase of certain books. Then there is chess with Terry at certain times. I also liked the 5 euros surprise grab bag. I will definitely visit again when in the area and I'm looking forward to visiting your New York location as well. Thank you Charlotte and Terry!
  • Desperate Literature is a fantastic bookshop and meeting place for anyone lucky enough to be in Madrid. Terry and Charlotte are warm people who are excited to share their ideas and tea with you. It has a wonderfully curated selection of books and perhaps more importantly a calm and centering feeling. Go if you get a chance. They are doing something special and it shows.
  • The space has a cozy tranquil feel, with some small books and chairs to sit in while you thumb through a book you'll invariably buy. Also a chessboard set up that you're encouraged to play, and a section of books that upon purchase entitle you to a free shot of whiskey! The books, both Spanish and English with a small wedge of French, are a fantastic curation blending the best oddities of bygone eras with the newest hottest books coming off the presses today. The books that show up on their shelves are the first tremors of many cultural quakes that come months later. To pick up a book off their shelves is to get in on a trend before the trend appears.
  • This is what a bookshop should be. A place to step back from things, peer into new worlds and find new friends. The owners Terry and Charlotte are two of the kindest people you'll ever meet; they're always happy to have new people in to browse or chat over a cup of tea. If you're looking for a community as well as great second-hand books, do not miss this place. You can find Spanish and French-language books as well as English, and there's always a section of staff recommendations if you're not sure what you're looking for.
