Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid

4.1
#16 of 85 in Museums in Madrid
Founded by a group of artists in 1880 and reorganized during the Movida in 1983, Circulo de Bellas Artes has served as an integral hub of art, education, and culture in Madrid since its inception. The nonprofit arts center houses vast collections of visual art, as well as its own cinema, theater, and radio station. Enjoy foreign and independent films in their original languages, or attend a concert, play, or presentation. The 1926 building, designed by the architect Antonio Palacios, is as emblematic as the art within it. The modern rooftop lounge is a popular place to have a cocktail while enjoying panoramic views of the city--it has a relaxed vibe and plenty of seating. People watchers will enjoy lunch at La Pecera (The Fishbowl), which boasts premium views of the Calle Alcalá through floor-to-ceiling windows. Circulo de Bellas Artes is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Madrid Edition.

  • We got on that terrace by chance because we wanted to watch the sunset from Madrid. Great views, great atmosphere, and not very expensive drinks for the site that was to be Madrid. We were more than one hour, it was phenomenal

  • Amazing views. Amazing lounge seats and water sprinklers. Great (pricey, though) cocktails. A pity we did not find and light snacks during the day (before 9 pm). We were craving for peanuts, a piece of fruit or ice cream. Ambience, music - all perfect for lazy midday siesta. A bit crowded in the evening. But hey - it's Madrid afterall!
  • Fantastic terrace and quite often good exhibitions although having lived in Madrid for 8 years you can really see the prices shoot up. The terrace has definitely become a tourist trap and the bar staff may try and over charge you. Even speaking fluent Spanish I was overcharged 10 euros. After realising the real prices of drinks I confronted the barman and he had my 10 euro note aside from the bar and told me he was saving it for me. What a joke. Still one of the best views of Madrid so would recommend it to both tourists and locals - just be careful not to get ripped off.
  • Rooftop bar with a great view. Really expensive for Madrid but you pay for the lovely surroundings I guess. The café at street level serves a really good breakfast for next to nothing. Highly recommended.
  • Beautiful place if you are visiting Madrid. Go to the last floor to take something and enjoy Madrid views. I really recommend go to see that historic building
  • Went to the Aztoea terrace. AMAZING views. And affordable drinks. A must visit.

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
