Church of San Ginés Iglesia de San Ginés de Arlés, Madrid

(4.1/5 based on 30+ reviews on the web)
The church of San Ginés in Madrid, is one of the oldest churches in that city. It is situated on the Calle Arenal. References to it appear in documents dating from the ninth century. Originally built in Mudéjar style, it was rebuilt in 1645.HistoryThe church was one of the churches of the medieval Madrid, of Mozarab origin, from between the 12th and 13th centuries, and its name comes from the fact that it was dedicated to the patron saint of notaries and secretaries, Saint Genesius of Arles (San Ginés de Arlés).It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1982.DescriptionThe church is preceded by an atrium enclosed by railings. It has a Latin cross plan, with a nave and two aisles separated by semicircular arches and several side chapels and the altarpieces belong to the Neoclassical-Romantic school. It was, however, totally reconstructed after suffering several fires, so few remnants of the original church, such as the bell-tower, remain. In 1870, the loggia and atrium facing the Calle Arenal were added. In the Santísimo Cristo Chapel there are artworks by Alonso Cano, Luca Giordano and el Greco. In fact, the painting by El Greco is not to be found in the chapel of the Santísimo, it is situated in the main church but covered by wood and it is only on display on Saturdays from 11.30 am to noon.

  • The visit to the Church deserves only for painting by El Greco, which is in a kind of wooden crate. Are there specific hours to see it and I am pretty tight.

  • The Iglesia Parroquial de San Ginés real stands between the Puerta del Sol and the theatre in the heart of the historical center of Madrid on the Calle Arenal. From the outside, the Church looks rather inconspicuous and relatively unadorned. The Interior of the historic building but positively surprised us. There is a lot for discovering and to marvel at and we felt very comfortable. Bottom line: One of the most beautiful churches, which we in Madrid have seen.

  • Really nice church and on the free tour they said that there was a dead crocodile in there a long time ago .It's free to go in but they encourage you to put some Money for donations .The only problem was the beggers near the entrance
  • We were on a walking tour and had walked about 5 minutes from Puerta del Sol and came upon the Church of San Gines which is the site of one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Madrid. It is free to get in although they encourage donations. It is small and compact and worth touring around. The only disappointing part is the beggars who surround the entrance who hassle you when entering and leaving.
