Basilica of Jesus de Medinaceli, Madrid

4.2
#34 of 69 in Historic Sites in Madrid
Church Tourist Spot
View a historically significant 17th-century statue of Jesus at Basilica of Jesus de Medinaceli, a Baroque-style Catholic church. Enter the elegant cathedral and climb the stairs to view the statue, created by artists in the School of Sevilla and originally transported to a Spanish fortress in Morocco. The piece was then captured by the Moors, ransomed by Trinitarian monks, and delivered to the church in 1682, where people now go to pray to its image. Many kiss the statue's feet after praying (and an employee dutifully wipes the surface after each kiss). Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.

  • I do like Madrid's Plazas, and this is one of the nicer ones with it's well trimmed bushes and bright fountain in the centre. The Museo del Prado is also located in this Plaza. The only thing that lets the Plaza down is that it's hard to relax due to the loud traffic.
  • Enemies of the Church Neptune Fountain
  • Tight streets, but this place is dope!
  • Amazing!
  • It is a centrally located and well adapted site.
