Basilica de San Miguel, Madrid

4.7
Basilica de San Miguel, a mid-18th century Roman Catholic church, serves as both an important architectural site and significant place of worship. A National Artistic Monument, its striking convex facade is rare in Spain and features statues of charity, faith, hope, and fortitude alongside a panel depicting the martyrdom of the children Justo and Pastor. Enter inside to discover the richly decorated interior, home to bright gilding, painted ceilings, wood sculptures, and a large organ. The holy children can be spotted again in a fresco from 1745, this time depicting their apotheosis. • The current church of 1739 sits on another previous century XII and XIII, built at the expense of D. Luis de Borbón by the architect Giacomo Bonavia. The façade shows a convex shape, divided into two sections separated by entablatures and divided in streets by pilasters. The interior establishes a concept of chapels as large altarpieces, attached to the wall, gives the work a strong sense of the illusionist and barroquizante. Cover is organised based on cross torales arches giving rise to spaces wide and tight as a vault.

  • Impressive outside, marbled inside. With 2 lovely stain glass windows above the confessionals. Great paintings above the altar area and ceiling.  more »
  • I highly recommend attending a celebration in this church, is a fantastic experience, because the art makes a great time contemplative. One of the most beautiful in Madrid, without doubt.

An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal.
