Modernist Cemetery, Lloret de Mar

4.1
#4 of 11 in Historic Sites in Lloret de Mar
Ornate gargoyles and angels look down on you as you stroll among the mausoleums in Modernist Cemetery. Designed and built around the turn of the century, the cemetery provides a snapshot of Catalan funerary art and architecture as it existed in the Modernist era. Most of the tombs belong to wealthy Indianos, a class of traders who made their fortune in the Americas before returning home to commission ornate homes and the mausoleums in this cemetery. Here you can see the work of sculptors and architects such as Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Antoni M. Gallissà i Soqué, and Vicenç Artigas i Albertí. Take a peaceful walk among the weathered monuments and read some of the inscriptions dating back to the 19th century. You will notice fresh flowers left by the loved ones of many of the people resting in the cemetery. • The cemetery consists of several parts. It's really overwhelming. It is very well kept and cared for. The tombs are big and special.

  • Modernist cemetery is considered to be one of the attractions of Lloret de Mar, may have ... Is unlikely to visit the cemetery adds positive tourist emotions, but out of interest might well look ... The more that architecture really looks impressive.

  • Here, on this Unesco cemetery Modernist Cemetry in Lloret, is looking with open mouth. Beautiful tombs above ground with flowers everywhere and very good. It is actually a village in a city. I do have 20 street names seen and one ' home ' more beautiful than the other. Architects are there mentions. You feel here also the difference of the rich and the poor; for some families all cottages with exposed cast iron doors and place for urns and caskets. In other places only a lonely cross of wood. This is a nice place for reflection and for rest. Access was free! That would be here in Netherlands is different I think...;-)
