Museo de San Isidoro, Leon

4.6
Museo de San Isidoro dates back a millenium, although it has been rebuilt since then. Within the church is a pantheon serving as the burial place to some dozens of members of Spanish royalty from centuries past. Be sure to look up at the ceiling frescos in this royal tomb. Relics from Saint John the Baptist and Saint Pelayo are on display, as well as the remains of San Isidoro. The museum is sure to interest history buffs, with medieval ivories, fabrics, and codices, as well as a Visigothic Bible. Look up at the facade to see a statue of Saint James the Moor Slayer mounted on horseback. • We loved it. People called the Romanesque Sistine Chapel and of course the paintings are fantastic. It also contains in its Museum the chalice of Doña Urraca, which relates to the Holy Grail. There is also the oldest Bell in Spain, among other many jewels. Royal Pantheon, there are 23 monarchs buried, as well as Queen, infantes, counts. A must-visit place.

  • not going tosit around for an houruntil they take you ona guided tour. Would be really advantageous if they made times available on website.  more »
  • With good reason they call it the Romanesque Sistine Chapel. The visit is guided, they explain it very well. You should visit it.

  • Must visit the cript
  • Absolutely spectacular, a real gem. The frescoes are wonderful, he lent me to see one of a Leonese mastiff. You can't come to León and not do the guided visit to the Museum and pantheon. I thought it was priced very cheap, considering that it is guided very professional. SHOCKING

  • The place is impressive and bound to see. The Guide gives some good explanations but at full speed: the vocabulary and concepts that I doubt that they can be understood by the public with such haste. What I guess is that the faster the visit they billed more money because 5 eurazos per person every half hour is not bad. However, if I pay 5 euros is ME has that allow making pictures without FLASH at least. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY REASON CANNOT BE PHOTOGRAPHS RATHER THAN SELL POSTCARDS WHICH INCIDENTALLY HAVE VERY BAD QUALITY. ON THE OTHER HAND, I HAVE TO HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE MY VISIT TO MY AIR WITHOUT ME GETTING RUSHED, WITH A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLES SO THAT YOU CAN MOVE YOU TO GET CLOSE TO THE WINDOWS TO SEE THEM. Who manages it only wants to make money clearly, a pity because it is an essential place. If you want to admire the paintings of the Pantheon, go get a book of art history: will have good images and all the time that want to.

  • Next to the Cathedral, one of the essential visits in Leon. The frescoes in the crypt are impressive. The visit is always a guide with this very well.
