  • The market hall is open fitted and not quite as attractive as one might expect from the oldest market here. It is true that the products are not too favorable. But buying local, fresh products and you are worth their price. The best level is that of José y Alicia. Fruits and vegetables such as painted, bang-fresh and tasty. José loves, what he's doing, knows a fabulously with all his goods, their origin, maturity stages and ideal preparation or consumption way. Everything he recommended was delicious, came from local (organic) production and had therefore also his very legitimate, by no means excessive price. We are again due to his entertainer qualities.

  • . A perfect gem - Waitrose on steroids . . . A gem of a place to visit and take photos! You can combine it with a stroll all around the Vegueta area, seeing the Cathedral and some very attractive streets, making a lovely half day out. And extend it with a long lunch! This is the "mercado de abastos" - the produce market, and is a Listed Historic Building as well as an exciting place to visit. Custom-built as a market in the mid-19th century, it takes up a whole block. On the outside, leading off the pavement, there are bars, restaurants and little shops. Inside is the Market Hall with stalls jam-packed round the edge and in the middle. A riot of colour, pulsating with people. Opening hours are 6.30 - 14.00 Monday to Thursday, 6.30 - 15.00 Friday and Saturday. This is not a tourist market with trinkets and beach dresses, it's where the Canarians come to do their daily shopping. Like Waitrose on steroids. You have never seen fruit like this. It's all enormous, brightly coloured. Avocados the size of melons - I thought that they WERE melons the first time I saw them. Vegetables. Fish - weird things from the Atlantic depths. And bustling full of people all morning. The sights, the sounds, the smells - like nothing else you'll see on your holiday! There is a good-sized carpark near it, so you can come early, park your car, go and have breakfast in one of the bars, visit the Cathedral and the streets of Vegueta, come back and visit the market, then eat fresher-than-fresh food for lunch in one of the little restaurants. Aaaah! Lovely. .
  • Be aware of Fruteria Victor y Pino. Offers free samples, but the fruits are unmarked and cost twice as much as anywhere else.
  • Fresh food of all kinds for good prices
  • Superb place to buy your meat and veg.
  • Well worth the visit if in the old quarter of the city, fruit, vegetables, meat, fish.....🏤
