Mirador del Rio, Lanzarote

4.1
#2 of 151 in Sightseeing in Canary Islands
Lookout Tourist Spot
Designed by an artist, Mirador del Rio is a viewpoint perched 475 m (1,558 ft) on the Batería del Río. Once a lookout for ships landing clandestinely on the shore, this location was used to represent an alien planet in the BBC's "Doctor Who.” At the cafe lookout, you can view the island of La Graciosa. The gift shop located next to the cafe is built into the volcanic rock that makes up the small mountain. • El Mirador has been carved into the rock by Cesar Manrique. It offers amazing views across to the island of La Graciosa. You can look out from the cafe through huge glass windows or venture outside on...  more »
  • We had a trip up and paid €9.50 entry for 2 of us, the views are spectacular even on a cloudy day but I'm not sure it is worth the entrance fee.  more »
  • Two words. Simply stunning. I could have spent hours up there simply looking and enjoying the view, despite it being seriously breezy. Well worth the visit and some great picture opportunities. A must...  more »

  • Well worth the trip. Great views but make sure the place is not covered in cloud. We had good coffee and superb apple tart. ...as well as great views
  • One oc the best places to visit in Lanzarote. entry price is reasonable and well worth it. We dis not eat in a cafe but sent to orzola town which has plenty of cafes to choose from..
  • I found this really enjoyable. I was lucky enough to visit on a beautiful day in December. The vistas were extensive in all directions. Apart from seeing La Graciosa and the island behind, I could see huge distances along the north coast and down to the south coast too. Seeing so much natural beauty creates a very tranquil atmosphere, particularly from the upper observation terrace. I would recommend everyone to go straight upstairs in good conditions, when you arrive, rather than sit looking through the "eyes", as you get a much better perspective from up there. The building itself is also interesting, because of the large windows and spaces, but also because it is virtually hidden inside the rocks and looks very natural from outside. I found the food and drinks at the cafe reasonably priced and very tasty. There are toilets available on the main terrace and the main floor and terrace are completely accessible. Parking is free. I don't think the €4.50 entry is so bad. Yes you can get a similar view nearby for free, but it would be a shame to travel so far and miss visiting such a unique building.
  • Nice views, nice building, cafeteria mmmh, toilettes, I think it's a must. It is fresh, open, clear can be covered from the wind if you like.
  • Gorgeous view from up there. There's a restaurant on site but it is a little expensive. You can buy a multipass to enter most the island's attractions and save money.
