  • LaGuardia is one of the most beautiful villages in the Basque country. Located in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, it possesses a historical case of beautiful streets of medieval style. In the list of sights and attractions of Laguardia should quote the set of walls that surround it, the Plaza Mayor, with the buildings of the new and the old town hall, and the medieval churches of San Juan and Santa María de los Reyes. The Church of SANTA MARÍA DE LOS REYES from Laguardia is one of the best Gothic churches of Spain thanks to its front page polychrome, to the point that it's one of the most spectacular examples of Spanish medieval art. The cover of the Church of Santa María de los Reyes is fully covered under a porch on the southern side of the temple. This is the reason why is has been able to keep in good condition both sculpture and especially its polychromy (a similar case is the western gate of the Collegiate Church of Toro, Zamora, another jewel of the covers of Spain, also on a mythical medieval city). This gate of the 14th century, large carved stone has five pointed archivolts, whose polychromy is 17th century. It treasures vegetal decoration common in this type of covers, but in which include statues of angels, Saints, prophets and Kings. The first archivolt is decorated with Angels which ring musical instruments by way of accompaniment of the scenes that make up the tympanum. The second archivolt is composed of plant motifs that overlap among them and gives way to the third, consisting of virgins and saints. The fourth archivolt is also plant and which closes the flaring of the cover is made up of prophets and Kings. All the figures are standing and covered by a beautiful canopy which in turn provides support to the figure that is on top of it. The supports of the arches are twelve statues representing the twelve apostles, whose identity is clarified by the attributes and inscriptions; they are life size and a very delicate and perfect size as if it were a spiritual stylization. Presiding over the twelve apostles and the mullion of the double doorway that leads to the temple, the image of the Virgen de los Reyes is located in. It is a sculpture which is situated on a high pedestal from where can preside over all the home scene. The image of fine carving and very well executed standing, holding his left arm in the figure of the child and slightly shaking his head towards him, in a hint of create a maternal scene, in which mother and son are talking normally. The tympanum is divided into three bands with scenes from the life of the Virgin: the Annunciation, visitation, Adoración de la Reyes Magos, Dormition of the Virgin, etc. At the top is the coronation of Mary. Only by this porch, well worth the visit to this medieval town. And provide for so much beauty with one of the many wines that are bred at the wineries in Laguardia. Because this hidden jewel shines as if it were exposed to the Sun of the most beautiful sunset... there with the Sierra de Cantabria of witness and the best Fables by Samaniego's company.

  • At the far end of this little town you will find the absolutely amazing church......even if you have seen hundreds of old European churches, you need to see this one. I'm not an architect, nor a builder, but, I can appreciate amazing structures. The portico is breath-taking".......see the rest for yourself.....

  • Although it is a scam to collect views, 360 ° view from above has delighted me and I think that climb and enjoy the viewpoint is worth... The views are of film. Be careful if you have vertigo, because you may have trouble climbing the stairs.
