Roque de Los Muchachos, La Palma

(4.8/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Roque de los Muchachos is a rocky mound at the highest point on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The rocks are found at an elevation of 2,423 m above sea level, not far from the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, where some of the world's largest telescopes are situated; the altitude and the dryness of the climate here give rise to excellent observing conditions. The rocks are contained with the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente. From the Roque, one can see the islands of Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera.

  • The car registered -0.5C, factor in the wind chill and it felt very cold. Ice had formed on the foliage. It was a very misty day so we didn't see much. We'll have to come back and see it on a clear da...  more »
  • We went from the East side by a road with lots of curves. Each curve in a spectacular and always sea view. The vegetation changes as you're climbing up to q will reach a point in q this disappears and begins the landscape of ochre colors and the sea of clouds below the mountains. Top telescopes as fungi (except Italian) it seems that you're in a lunar landscape. After seeing the great Canary telescope (GRATECAN) a must visit, we headed to the Roque de los Muchachos. Here you are up and everything is at your feet. If the weather is good you can see the huge mountains, the cut of vertigo, different and whimsical shapes of the rocks. The clear sky and the silence enhance the place. More beyond the plain with its plantations of bananas "bandaged" with fabrics white. The clouds that come of the this for spread is when pass them summits had the West (waterfall of clouds) to the Fund, the islands of the iron, the Gomerian and Tenerife with the Teide. We could see the Teide with a veil at the Summit. The show is daunting. Everything is taken care of and there are trails that take you to the full public (in this case of Germans) viewpoints. We went down the road to the West. Another wonderful trip with a totally different vegetation. The island (requete) is a so-called nice! A beauty of island. Mandatory to go!

  • Go to the island of the Palm and not go to the Roque of them boys, is not have status in the Palm. If you're lucky and get a bright, blue day, you'll see one of the most beautiful you've ever seen. If contracts with time and make the guided visit to the telescopes, you'll love. However, the visit to the island of SAN MIGUEL DE LA PALMA, for people who like hiking, relax, the scenery offered by the island and the good food, the holidays can be unforgettable.

  • A beautiful location with spectacular views of the Caldera de Taburiente and of the other islands. Also home to many large and important telescopes which are almost as interesting as the view. The road up from Santa Cruz is very winding so I hope you don't get car sick (totally worth it even if you do). In the winter time the roads can be closed due to snow. In that case, it's fun to do as the locals do and drive up to play in it! Oh, and there are no petrol stations along the road so make sure you have enough fuel before leaving sea level...
  • Stunning view of the caldera. A must visit
  • Beautiful landscape, with friendly crows!!
  • Simply Awesome!!!! It takes your breath away!!!!!!!!!
  • Great vantage point. Duty visit in a la Palma. The best early visit. Later in the day, the parking spaces are occupied.
