Observatorium Roque de Los Muchachos, La Palma

4.4
#2 of 9 in Museums in La Palma
Roque de los Muchachos is a rocky mound at the highest point on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The rocks are found at an elevation of 2,423 m above sea level, not far from the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, where some of the world's largest telescopes are situated; the altitude and the dryness of the climate here give rise to excellent observing conditions. The rocks are contained with the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente. From the Roque, one can see the islands of Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera.

  • The stars of the night sky to see the Observatory as it ascended. The Observatory's height 2, 1 hour drive took a little over a year and 426m. On the ground and spreads its way to the top of the mountains and the sea and the sky, the scenery was a tour de force of my life. To view the stars wore to the place in winter clothes. Sunset time at 9:00 pm. And appear as stars come to mind over the chest to arduous. Paul rice, Vega, Scorpio, little bear, big bear, Cassiopeia, Orion, moon, Jupiter, Venus, Sirius, and it was the best day of my life, Milkyway.

  • Passionate of astronomy since the age of 9 years (I'm 25 more!) and having passed the virus to my 10 year old son, a visit to this Observatory was for us 2 obligatory passage. Although the road is a bit difficult, moving worth. Located on the highest point of the island, over 2400 m above sea level, the view is breathtaking on the Caldera de Taburiente. A visit from a professional Observatory for an enthusiast is always a special moment. Not surprisingly, I took your eyes on entering the dome of William Herschel, before the dome of the Gran Tecan and the MAGIC. Sparkling eyes and the smile of my son suggests that he too was happy to be there. We regret not being able to stay the night to observe and meet the astrophysicists. A beautiful moment that will remain engraved in our memories.

  • I've seen in previous comments that there are people who complain about the lack of restaurant or gift shop in the Observatory. There is no restaurant or gift shop because it is not a place for recreational or commercial, or to go and spend the day, but they are high level scientific facilities in which only the researchers and operators of telescopes work. Guided tours to some of the telescopes are given, but it is not an amusement park. Think that there are people working day and night in the Observatory, and visits may not interfere with our work.
