Alcázar de Jerez, Jerez De La Frontera

First constructed in the 11th century by Andalusia’s Moorish rulers, Alcázar de Jerez is an imposing and elegant monument to the history of southern Spain. The fortress has massive fortified towers and 4,000 m (13,123 ft) of walls designed to protect its inhabitants from attack. Climb to the tops of these lookouts for sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Wander the lush gardens inside the keep, complete with intricate fountains and flowering plants, and explore the former bathhouse complex. Discover Jerez’s only remaining mosque structure, which was converted into a church after the European conquest of the city, and enriches the castle’s varied architectural heritage. • I think we were spoiled as we had been to the Alhambra the previous year. Obviously not on the same scale. Interesting but not worth it if you've been to the Alhambra. If you haven't suggest you do!  more »
  • For my best visit that will be in Jerez, for €5, you have total freedom to move around the monument. There are many explanations of each building or stay you are visiting. If you like visits by free is ideal. In my case I could not visit the Camera Obscura, a penalty. Another negative aspect is that the outside not very clean, cans, bottles, paper and as in the Cathedral smell of urine. I have come to see people peeing in the surroundings... in broad daylight while he walked his dog. Regrettable.

  • Visited the alcazar on a flying visit to Jerez. Not much to 'do' there, but lovely architecture and beautiful gardens. All signage bilingual in English and Castellano so easy to understand, and the la...  more »

  • A love fortress with fruit trees and gardens. The walls and towers give a nice view over the city of Jerez and the surrounding countryside. During our visit the mosque was closed for what appeared to be a Tio Pepe related filming which was a bit disappointing. While interesting and lovely in its own right it cannot compare with the Alhambra.
  • Interesting historical fortress with multilingual displays. Much of the site has been restored to a high standard. Worth a visit
  • definitely worth it! Very interesting and good textual explanations next to the sightings
  • This was the highlight of our visit to Jerez. Beautiful architecture that has managed to survive the test of time and Christian invasions. Large open spaces and gardens with water features and simple yet elegant designs are the characteristics of Arabic architecture from this time. It wasn't crowded when we visited (early April), unlike Seville which was too crowded for me at least, to appreciate the architecture there.
  • The Alcazar of Jerez is well worth a visit. It is not to be compared with the Alcazar of Sevilla or the Alhambra in Granada, but the smaller scale, well maintained fortification, palace and mosque are beautiful in their simplicity. You will get a very nice view of Jerez and its surrounding countryside too, especially from the octagonal tower. The palace has a relatively young and very high quality camera obscura, which I think are clever, fun and wonderful instruments. The apothecary inside the palace takes you right back to the past, it is well kept and decorated. Personally I think the old mosque is a very spiritual place. It is old, very serene and looks amazing from the outside too. One hour is enough to do a quick tour, but 2 hours allows for a quiet moment in the mosque, a moment of quiet in the gardens and a visit to the camera obscura as well.
