Museo Castillo De Javier, Javier

(3.3/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Rising atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the frontier with Aragon, Museo Castillo De Javier offers spectacular views of Navarre's famously green hills and forests. The castle dates back to the tenth century, and is well-known among locals as the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Navarre. The castle is also home to a large number of 15th- to 20th-century Spanish paintings, as well as a collection of 19th-century Japanese kakemonos collected by the saint during his missions in Japan. Don't miss the 14th century Christ figure in the chapel of the Torre del Santo Cristo which, according to legend, bled when St. Francis Xavier was taking his last breaths in China. If you happen to be visiting in early March, note that the castle is the site of a major pilgrimage around this time in honour of its patron saint. • The castle is beautiful on the outside, on the inside there are rooms with paintings, documents, coins... and many objects of the legacy of Javier. Worth paying a little more for the visit with audio guide (at your own pace, but so you hear many things). Next to the castle there is a basilica, more late but interesting. The entry here is free.

  • Is beautiful on the outside, but if you're not fond of the painting does not lack that you come to visit him, not visits nothing Castle only rooms with paintings and figures say brought from Asia.

  • If these are the area feel free to go visit him. This very well preserved. The Church can be seen free, for the Castle pay, not much.

  • Castle for me is much nicer on the outside to inside. When pass the first door of the Castle you see that have closed access to the walls and to the outside. The only option is to enter into and once there there is access to the walls...(a penalty). The entrance is 2.75 euros without audioguide. It has a museum with the history of San Francisco Javier, pictures, several rooms, the homage Tower (which is the only time that exits to the outside) and the chapel. It is completely rebuilt. On one side, and accessed from the exterior of the castle is the basilica which you can visit for free.
