Museo Castillo De Javier, Javier

(3.3/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Rising atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the frontier with Aragon, Museo Castillo De Javier offers spectacular views of Navarre's famously green hills and forests. The castle dates back to the tenth century, and is well-known among locals as the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Navarre. The castle is also home to a large number of 15th- to 20th-century Spanish paintings, as well as a collection of 19th-century Japanese kakemonos collected by the saint during his missions in Japan. Don't miss the 14th century Christ figure in the chapel of the Torre del Santo Cristo which, according to legend, bled when St. Francis Xavier was taking his last breaths in China. If you happen to be visiting in early March, note that the castle is the site of a major pilgrimage around this time in honour of its patron saint. • This castle was the childhood home of the Jesuit heiligens, hikers and Japan driver, Franciscus Xaverius. The museum displays not only interesting facts about countries Holy, but it has also insight into life in the 16th century. In the summer is always a sound and light show

  • ... all at least in this period of January. We can guess that there is probably more in summer! The site is well preserved and laid out with a "parking" and only pedestrian access. Even if there isn't a major Castle, and it was largely restored, we have the pleasure to visit a beautiful construction and quickly discover the life of St. Francis Xavier. The site is nice. In short a beautiful stop

  • The castle on the outside is very nice inside too in my opinion. Booklet giving does not specify anything about the halls or rooms, you can not climb to the top of the Tower, if the visit is too short by the lack of explanations and a little heavy exposure.

  • Castle for me is much nicer on the outside to inside. When pass the first door of the Castle you see that have closed access to the walls and to the outside. The only option is to enter into and once there there is access to the walls...(a penalty). The entrance is 2.75 euros without audioguide. It has a museum with the history of San Francisco Javier, pictures, several rooms, the homage Tower (which is the only time that exits to the outside) and the chapel. It is completely rebuilt. On one side, and accessed from the exterior of the castle is the basilica which you can visit for free.
