  • At the top of the mount Aldabe, the building is a monumental votive offerings built to commemorate the victory of the people of Irun on the French troops of King François Ier, during the battle of June 30, 1522, who lives oppose the Castilian army and franco-navarraises training. The confrontation followed the partition of the Kingdom of Navarre, between the France and the Spain. The site will also be that of other battles: August 31, 1813, during the war of Spanish independence, he'll oppose the Anglo-Spanish troops to the French imperial troops; and yet, from July to September 1936, oppose it during the Spanish civil war, nationalist and Republican troops. Destroyed by a fire caused by lightning in 1796, rebuilt as early as 1804, he grows a tower in 1910 until 1936 fighting won't damage it again. On the esplanade, in front of the building, stands a monument shaped Pinnacle in carved stone. The plaques of different battles are sealed. Each year, the day before and on the anniversary date of June 30, the day of saint Martial, patron saint of the town of Irun, it is a ritual for the locals, dressed for the occasion in red, black and white, to go to the Hermitage, in a huge procession involving thousands of soldiers, artillery, Cavalry, infantry, loggers and Sappers all marching in order perfect from 4 o'clock in the morning in order to respect the historical chronology of the event. Is the parade, the "alarde of San Marcial" as they say here, and the entire city, the sound of fifes and drums, gets drunk with the smell of the powder of thousands of rifles. From the front of the Church or from the platform erected on his right, panoramic view on the city, the Bay of Txingudi, the Bidassoa, Jaizkibel Hondarribia. A breathtaking. Namely: the site, possibility of a picnic under the trees where tables and benches; possibility to dine at the "Cantina San Marcial" (see in). small play area for young children; possibilities of nearby Mount Aldabe ballads.
