#1 of 12 in Things to do in Icod de los Vinos
Cueva del Viento-Sobrado underground complex is the largest lava tube in Europe, and the fifth largest in the world, behind a series of lava tubes in Hawaii. It is also considered the most complex volcanic tube in the world, due to its morphology of several levels and passages. It was created by lava flows from Pico Viejo, next to Mount Teide. The cave is located in the town of Icod de los Vinos in the north of the island of Tenerife, Spain. It extends more than and contains three different levels of passageways, each full of geomorphological phenomena such as lava pits and terraces. The cave is rich in fossils of the "Canarian megafauna". Bones of Gallotia goliath and Canariomys bravoi, an extinct giant lizard and rat, respectively, have been discovered here.Archaeological remains belonging to the Guanches, the ancient Berber native inhabitants of the Canary Islands, were found in several entries to the tube system. At present, the Cueva del Viento is a tourist attraction of the island.

  • Big surprise, recommended for everyone. wonderful guides, (whereby the less we had), if you have visited caves in other places, get ready to something different, special and different.

  • The visit is interesting and the explanations are clear, sharp, accurate and easy to understand for all, however we did not appreciate the guide. Rather unlikable, many people of the 3rd that day with us to make the visit. To reach the cave first to take a path that goes wrong, it is not difficult but just don't go and a person of 65 years cannot keep pace with one of 30. And it really was the forced March without 1 second of the nature that surrounds us. To guide the only thing it's timing, timing, and timing. Total lack of empathy and disparaging thoughts.

  • If what you like is to go to the sites to visit the most amazing and beautiful landscapes, this place is a must stop. We loved the staff, very professional and close. You learn a lot, above all the large number of volcanoes of the island and its characteristics. In addition to respect a lot the environment, why are arranged visits, small groups and without artificial lights to danarian inside the cave. A sure hit. Congratulations to the whole team!

  • Very informative intimate tour with head gear and lamp provided. Great guide answering all questions very clearly, detailed and honestly. Make sure to not bring valuables or a bag with you because you are unable to bring them into the cave and shouldn't leave them in your car. Definitely cool to see and worth the €20. Make sure to book online at least a week in advance during low season and weeks ahead during high season. They only have 2 tours a day with a max of 15 ppl and always book full. Highly recommended to see something different on the island and to experience the most complex and largest lava tunnels outside of Hawaii's.
  • A very interesting excursion into the bowels of a - dead - volcano or rather into the network of lava tubes created by eruptions. The guide was very knowledgeable and explained the different kinds of lava flows and how the volcanic landscape has created. He also showed us the different life forms that have evolved in the complete darkness of the lava tubes. Helmets and headlights are provided. Strong walking shoes/boots are a must because the floor of the lava tube is rough and uneven. The average temperature in the tube is 12°C so warm clothing is necessary. Visits are organised in Spanish, English and French and you must book in advance as there are limited places.
  • Although the actual lava tube visit is just 200metres long, it is indeed a unique experience and the 2.5 hour activity is a geology lesson, forest hike and much more rolled into one, an easy family activity. Guide was enthusiastic and passionate about the subject and personally involved in working to explore more into the lava caves and study of volcanoes undertaken by the Government. We booked the english tour time slot several weeks in advance online on their website. No backpacks allowed on the tour and advisable not to leave anything of value in the car either as thieves are known to operate in the car park. The floor inside the lava cave is left in natural state, is very bumpy and sharp and good walking shoes with thick soles are a must. Sandals/flip flops/heels are all prohibited. Also not suitable for mobility impaired or for pushchairs. The drive to reach the place from Icod Vinos is rather steep (30 degree angle road) and better to keep that in mind. Also advisable to use the toilets in the office as there are none during the next 2 hours.
  • You must reserve your tour well in advance. Without reservation you won't get a chance to visit the caves. Staff are friendly though they refused our requests but suggested us alternate interesting sight seeing possibilities.
  • Great tour of natural lava caves with great guides who have a lot of knowledge about the geology and history of the island and volcanos
