4.7
#4 of 26 in Nature in Tenerife
Cueva del Viento-Sobrado underground complex is the largest lava tube in Europe, and the fifth largest in the world, behind a series of lava tubes in Hawaii. It is also considered the most complex volcanic tube in the world, due to its morphology of several levels and passages. It was created by lava flows from Pico Viejo, next to Mount Teide. The cave is located in the town of Icod de los Vinos in the north of the island of Tenerife, Spain. It extends more than and contains three different levels of passageways, each full of geomorphological phenomena such as lava pits and terraces. The cave is rich in fossils of the "Canarian megafauna". Bones of Gallotia goliath and Canariomys bravoi, an extinct giant lizard and rat, respectively, have been discovered here.Archaeological remains belonging to the Guanches, the ancient Berber native inhabitants of the Canary Islands, were found in several entries to the tube system. At present, the Cueva del Viento is a tourist attraction of the island.

A few weeks ago there were in our family trip, I can not put a but to that visit, starting with the guide who gave us a master class with numerous anecdotes and scientific data that left us amazed. You could tell that he loved his work and knew their land. The complete tour, walk through countryside and visit to the tube. Something that is not all day and that moment of dramatic silence. It would repeat it and also I have recommended a few friends going this week. And also if as it is done to us late to eat there same together there is a bar that is eaten very good homemade food.

It's an interesting and dynamic visit to a stretch of the volcanic tube generated by the lava flows of Mount Teide. We request appointment online and visit began with punctuality. Highly recommended as activity during the holidays

From Puerto de la Cruz, it is approximately 30 minutes (and public holidays 30 EUR) to get to the curve of the Viento at icon according to Internet. The taxi driver asked his colleagues and drove marked otherwise as (good). That cost time and nerves, but it paid off. The lead was English by a native speaker, who from the outset was the 4 primary school children, who were in the group with. After an introduction to the visitor centre with footage from Hawaii, where these lava tubes still occur, it went up a piece of the mountain with two minibuses. The rest, we went on foot. It became clear why shoes had been recommended. On the different rock formations was made aware. Because marketing including mandatory commercial photo stations is not the head offered to take family photos at the cave entrance with the on-board cameras. The explanations were vivid and understandable, I have thoroughly enjoyed the two hours and learned a lot about basalt in an entertaining way. (Did you know that he absorbs light and noise?)

Absolutely amazing. I went on the tour guide and it was something everyone should experience someday. There's even a built-in air conditioner! Top marks.

Lots of good information to bring awareness to the issue of protecting the Canary Islands' natural resources and uniqueness, instead of yielding to false progress, globalization, and pondering to unconscientious tourism and overdevelopment.

Excellent guide - good explanations of volcanic phenomena, fauna in the lava tubes, guanche culture, etc.

Very good organized. Professional and kind people. You receive useful information. But the tour is draged out. It lasts 2,5 hours. You see just a short part in the underground. All can be shortened to 45 minutes but they have to justify the overpriced fee. They give you the feeling you are doing something exclusive. You need to make a reservation. The price is 20 euro / person. Concluding: if you have time you can go there. If your holiday is short, better explore the island in other ways.

Fantastic place to look around, truly unbelievable. We had the tour in English from a lovely (German?) man who was very knowledgeable and had a wonderful passion for the tunnels which made it so much more engaging. Highly recommended and I consider it a bargain at €20 per person compared to all the other attractions here.
