Before dedicating his life to the poor and the sick and to establish the order of the Hospitallers of St. John of God, a young Portuguese San Juan de Dios was a shepherd, a soldier, a builder and seller of books and in house Pisa he died in the year 1550. In the nineteenth century the building was acquired by the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, considering it one of the most important elements of their heritage.
