Basílica de San Juan de Dios, Granada
(4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Basílica de San Juan de Dios is the spiritual center of the St John of God order, and an ideal example of the Granada Baroque architectural style. Walk around the church to see the towers and facade before entering to view the ornately decorated interior. As you explore, you will see elaborately decorated domes and chapels, with walls covered in artwork, inlaid mirrors, and a wealth of gilded furnishings. Make your way to the sacristy and see a museum-like collection of 62 frames and mirrors, or climb up to the dressing room to a gallery of art pieces. Wander into the post-chapel and see precious objects that have survived the numerous lootings that the church has undergone, then view the gold adornments of the Camarín reliquary. If you prefer a more religious experience, Sunday masses are still held. • We just happened upon this beautiful basilica, and felt so blessed for having done so. First of all, the basilica is a masterpiece of baroque art, but doesn't feel garish or overly done. It's just gor...  more »
  • This church doesn't seem to make the list of top attractions, but it is a gem, especially if you can get a guide to take you to the upper level and into the treasury. The decoration is just amazing, a...  more »
  • Many criticize the paying admission just because it's a place of worship. St. John is not only a place of worship is a treasure trove of works overtime. It is also the chapel of "San Giovanni di Dio" and if that wasn't enough the Basilica contains the Saint's body. St. John's, venerable here, was the founder of welcome or hospitals. Anyone, regardless of rank or faith professed, was welcome. Such a forward-looking vision that is giving concrete results for centuries deserves attention and reflection. After doing the rounds in Church, where everything is taken care of, well maintained and affordable, the keeper came up and asked us if we were done, not for rudeness or exhort us to come out, only to drive us to the Saint's tomb which is on the first floor and partially visible from the Church. We were faced with a masterpiece of Goldsmith's art that you cannot describe. Just seeing him you can give an account of beauty. Beautiful and indisputable the Alhambra, is unmatched, but this temple, as a suggestion, do you have anything less ... Manuela and Alessandro Gori
