Basílica de San Juan de Dios, Granada
Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Basílica de San Juan de Dios is the spiritual center of the St John of God order, and an ideal example of the Granada Baroque architectural style. Walk around the church to see the towers and facade before entering to view the ornately decorated interior. As you explore, you will see elaborately decorated domes and chapels, with walls covered in artwork, inlaid mirrors, and a wealth of gilded furnishings. Make your way to the sacristy and see a museum-like collection of 62 frames and mirrors, or climb up to the dressing room to a gallery of art pieces. Wander into the post-chapel and see precious objects that have survived the numerous lootings that the church has undergone, then view the gold adornments of the Camarín reliquary. If you prefer a more religious experience, Sunday masses are still held. Lovely place with steps, no ramps, lots of history. You must take your time walking though this holy place because you do not want to miss any of the history.
