Albayzin, Granada

4.6
#1 of 6 in Neighborhoods in Granada
Become part of living history at Albayzin, the city’s old Moorish neighborhood, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984. Nostalgic and quaint, the area retained most of the narrow winding streets and buildings of its medieval Moorish past. Situated on a hill above the city center and offering unobstructed views of the famous Alhambra, this ancient quarter allows visitors a chance to see and explore white-washed old buildings, Arabic shops and restaurants, and scenic gardens. Dating back to the 14th century, when it thrived as a self-contained regional center, the neighborhood is now a kind of open-air museum in which you could lose yourself for days. Highlights within the area include remains of an Arab bath complex, the city’s archaeological museum, and a Catholic church built on the remains of a Moorish mosque. • From my point of view, it is one of the most beautiful of the city. Thousand convoluted streets that get lost and a unique charm, also beautiful views and a quite a few monuments Hispanic Muslims. There are many small squares where tapea great, as for example Plaza Larga along around the neighborhood. Traveling across that area you can find people singing, dancing, or playing the guitar, even some that another place of craft things. It is very pleasant to stroll throughout the area. A wonderful neighborhood.

Where to stay in Granada

Granada is built in a valley looking up to the majestic Alhambra, and most visitors choose to stay where the view can be admired. Plaza Nueva, just down the hill from the Alhambra entry gates, constitutes the touristic center of the city. Many of the famous free-tapas bars and lively restaurants line this famous plaza, as well as a number of small hotels and apartment rentals. Found directly behind the plaza are the city's two historical old Moorish quarters, Albayzín and El Sacramonte, which are characterized by their narrow winding streets and picturesque whitewashed buildings. Here you'll find a number of charming hotels with hillside views of the Alhambra and city center.
