Albayzin, Granada

4.6
#1 of 6 in Neighborhoods in Granada
Become part of living history at Albayzin, the city’s old Moorish neighborhood, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1984. Nostalgic and quaint, the area retained most of the narrow winding streets and buildings of its medieval Moorish past. Situated on a hill above the city center and offering unobstructed views of the famous Alhambra, this ancient quarter allows visitors a chance to see and explore white-washed old buildings, Arabic shops and restaurants, and scenic gardens. Dating back to the 14th century, when it thrived as a self-contained regional center, the neighborhood is now a kind of open-air museum in which you could lose yourself for days. Highlights within the area include remains of an Arab bath complex, the city’s archaeological museum, and a Catholic church built on the remains of a Moorish mosque. • Ideal for strolling through the streets, with many charming streets. Numerous bars and terraces for tapas quite good and cheap

  • The truth that being Asturias and living among mountains doesn't impress all see the Albayzín from the terrace you have opposite. Is full of people taking things and other people also selling crafts and things as well. I I'm not very partisan cultural visits and move 10 km in a day in your holiday period but the truth is that I'd rather go to the beach.

  • In the face of the Alhambra, this tangle of alleys between white houses evoking Tetuan breathes peace. He should be able to Pierce her charms, hidden behind high walls where we guess despite all the shady patios and courtyards fresh and beautifully decorated with azulejos. One consolation however be lost in meandering which lead to small charming places, colonized by cats taking the Sun without worrying more about the barge that passes.

Where to stay in Granada

Granada is built in a valley looking up to the majestic Alhambra, and most visitors choose to stay where the view can be admired. Plaza Nueva, just down the hill from the Alhambra entry gates, constitutes the touristic center of the city. Many of the famous free-tapas bars and lively restaurants line this famous plaza, as well as a number of small hotels and apartment rentals. Found directly behind the plaza are the city's two historical old Moorish quarters, Albayzín and El Sacramonte, which are characterized by their narrow winding streets and picturesque whitewashed buildings. Here you'll find a number of charming hotels with hillside views of the Alhambra and city center.
