Barranco de Guayadeque, Gran Canaria

4.5
Barranco de Guayadeque is a cliff top filled with indigenous plants and natural caves originally settled by pioneers on the island. Visit the museum for a look at many of the artifacts they left behind. You can drive or catch a tour bus to see the caves themselves, many of which are still inhabited today, though they are now wired for electricity. Some of the residents may even invite you inside. A restaurant on the cliff offers traditional Canarian fare such as fried pork, traditionally prepared boiled potatoes, and local wine. • Here is an amazing place, where one is impressed by the wild grandeur of the "barranco" (volcanic mountain gullied by rain). It can be visited by car since a good road leads to the bottom of the ravine. Do not miss to visit on foot the small Guayadeque partly troglodytic village on the mountainside. Its inhabitants live breeding and a few sparse crops (almond trees etc.). Few tourists to this place yet unusual and remote. We see, as in many other place of Gran Canaria, the caves and appointed niches on the mountainside.

  • When you are at one of the restaurants at the end of the road, looking at the view back down the gorge, it is hard to imagine you are only 30 minutes from the airport. In fact, the barranco drive itse...  more »

  • Fantastic scenery, truly stunning and beautiful. Even on a cloudier day, you are still rewarded with such fantastic views of the landscape. Would highly recommend for anyone. Locals are very polite and friendly. Note that there are several steps and no fully tarmacked path. This is great if you want to go walking up the mountains (there are winding tracks you follow), but you couldn't bring a pushchair or wheelchair.
  • The nature is heavily. This is the place to go if you don't have a lot of time on your hands. Magical.
  • Cute place in a cave with local produce and gifts plus nice views out to the valley. The ceramics were nice but a bit on the pricey side.
  • Great little village. If you arrive early you will have the place to yourself (very recomended) take the small hiking trail to the top of the southern ridge and enjoy a spectacular view. The trail is not that hard but not recomended for small children or people with trouble walking. Be sure to visit the small museum a little further down the valley and perhaps one of the mountain restaurants a little further up the valley. The village itself is pretty and somewhat fascinating but gets flooded with tourists around noon.
  • Food was great. Service was friendly. Lovely drive to get there.
