Barranco de Guayadeque, Gran Canaria

4.5
Barranco de Guayadeque is a cliff top filled with indigenous plants and natural caves originally settled by pioneers on the island. Visit the museum for a look at many of the artifacts they left behind. You can drive or catch a tour bus to see the caves themselves, many of which are still inhabited today, though they are now wired for electricity. Some of the residents may even invite you inside. A restaurant on the cliff offers traditional Canarian fare such as fried pork, traditionally prepared boiled potatoes, and local wine. • Here is an amazing place, where one is impressed by the wild grandeur of the "barranco" (volcanic mountain gullied by rain). It can be visited by car since a good road leads to the bottom of the ravine. Do not miss to visit on foot the small Guayadeque partly troglodytic village on the mountainside. Its inhabitants live breeding and a few sparse crops (almond trees etc.). Few tourists to this place yet unusual and remote. We see, as in many other place of Gran Canaria, the caves and appointed niches on the mountainside.

  • When you are at one of the restaurants at the end of the road, looking at the view back down the gorge, it is hard to imagine you are only 30 minutes from the airport. In fact, the barranco drive itse...  more »

  • There you can see a church caved in to a rocky mountain and also many houses. Guayadeque is one of the most recognised place where ancients inhabitants lived before being conquest by Spanish army in 1483
  • Unexpectedly amazing. Go and see it. You won't regret it.
  • Absolutely amazing! History + nature combined! Definitely go to the small museum at the bottom first, it's cheap and small so doesn't take long but gives you such an insight so you know what you are looking at!
  • A beautiful valley with lots of history. We drove to the restaurant Guayadeque and walked around the local area. Although the road is a dead end, just park up and enjoy the views. This slice of Gran Canaria is great to go for tapas in one of the restaurants or visit the church built in a cave as well as enjoy the many walking paths around the valley.
  • Spectacular scenery. Good museum and interpretation centre. Quirky cave houses and restaurants. Great walking up beyond the end of the metalled road.
