Arab Baths, Girona

3.6
#1 of 9 in Spas in Province of Girona
Dating back to 1194, Arab Baths is a Romanesque building imitating the Muslim baths popular at the time. Situated in a wild garden crowned by spiky palms, the baths are a cool oasis with a changing room, octagonal pool, steam bath, and cold and warm rooms. Among the stately columns, ornate scrolls, and rustic stone walls, you'll be transported back the to the 12th century, when townspeople came here to escape the sun and have a leisurely soak. Don't forget to ascend the spiral staircase, which offers a great view of the surrounding area. These baths have visited after the photo shoot with the throne of season 6 Games of the throne, which was filmed in Girona. Several scenes filmed in baths and romance of the twelfth century building, no relation to the Arabs baths do not have. The baths were built in the 12th century, a few centuries after the expulsion of the Arabs from Girona. In this open-air museum liked mosaic floors and an outdoor pool dome. Recommend to visit as part of the complex of the Cathedral.

The so-called Arab baths which are actually Roman are very close to the Cathedral (12th century), but built in the style of the old Arab baths, which was the fashion of the time. Used by Christians and Jews until the 14th century. They then went on to join the Capuchin nuns, until they were acquired by the Diputació de Girona, restored and open to the public in 1929. They are tiny, but they are very well preserved. The entrance is worth €2, for students and retired people only €1. They are composed of 4 rooms: wardrobe or apoditerio, which include columns and small pool, the cold room or frigidarium, warm room or tepidarium and the Caldarium or hot room. A brief visit, but interesting.

  • Beautiful old baths, definitely worth a visit. The way the place has been fixed is fantastic as it does not interfere with the building but allows you to go into all the rooms and have a great view of the roof.
