  • Worth the trip to see this monument. You get to really see the expression of the woman. A bit eery, but in a good way.  more »

  • The look on her face alone reflects the anguish. This is a stunning sculpture in a perfect setting. You need to know the basis of the history, and Asturias place in the Civil War, ideally; but it's we...  more »

  • Nice pokemones
  • 18/09/1970 opened at one end of the beach of San Lorenzo in Gijón, a sculpture consisting of a bronze piece commissioned by the Spanish Institute of migration, and paid for by the City Council of Gijón, the Cantabrian Ramón Muriedas. The author tried to generalize, a woman who is a symbol: mother, sister, cousin, the great-aunt of the emigrant. A figure that has been repeated since centuries.  The idea was to make a monument to the mother of the emigrant, the boy who was going with 12, 14, 15 years in all the Cantabrian from France to Galicia. Poor and sad, then returning powerful and triumphant, healthy and friendly. It is so beautiful history of the indianeria that no longer exists. Indies in this regard came to an end. When it was all finished, it came crashing down because the armor was poorly manufactured, there to do everything fast and running because it was the opening. Ramón Muriedas died in November 2014 the work, away from the usual commemorative sculpture to use cannons, was misunderstood, criticized and reviled for a long time to understand that, in any way, it symbolized image overseas emigrants kept their mothers. In 1977, the mother of the emigrant, after suffering an attack that mutilated her bottom and the ravages of a great galerna that leaned it dangerously, was withdrawn for restoration (performed by Francisco Macías), staying in local stores, until the early 1980s, despite being considered the possibility of placing it in the remodelled gardens of Náutico in 1978. On that same date settled in Campo Valdés the statue of the Emperor Octavio Augusto, who was very well received in the city by his classical aesthetics, as opposed to modernity that supposed the mother of migrants. It said maliciously that had been installed in el Rinconin by have not met another point farthest from the heart of the city. Work that was popularly called as "muyerona" and also as "the lloca de el rinconin". Sure enough, it was crazy. Crazy's penalty. The sculpture of Muriedas, overlooking the sea torn with an arm raised, is the monument to the emigrant's mother. The sculptor tried to capture the suffering of many Asturian mothers, separated from children splitting to a future uncertain in search of a life better in it. In all Spain is still migrating. In all Spain and all times have been mad pain mothers.

  • Beautiful area of Gijón to stroll and enjoy a wonderful view. The very guapina lloca.

  • Impressive! It is near the parque de el Rinconin. In this area is the beach where it can bathe dogs year-round. Accessible and comfortable

  • I confess that it is not my favorite sculpture far. But its raison d'etre is much more valuable than any feature of hidden beauty that is intended to find and emotional.
