Iglesia de San Martin de Fromista, Fromista

The church of San Martín de Tours de Frómista in Frómista, province of Palencia, Spain, has been built in the 11th century in Romanesque style. It is located on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostella.HistoryThe construction of the church was begun in the second half of the 11th century by will of queen Muniadona of Castile, as part of a monastery, which has disappeared. The church is mentioned for the first time in 1066, and is stylistically connected to other Romanesque edifices in the province, such as the Cathedral of Jaca.In 1118 it was assigned to the Benedictine priory of San Zoilo at Carrión de los Condes. The monks abandoned the site in the 13th century, giving it to Don Juan Gómez de Manzanedo. During several changes of ownership in the following centuries, the church received several additions in the 15th century: a bell tower over the original dome, and a sacristy. After the Middle Ages it started to decay, and in the 19th century it was declared no longer fit for use as a church. In 1894 it was declared a National Monument and a restoration was started. This brought the church back to its original state, removing numerous later additions. The church was reopened to the public in 1904.DescriptionSan Martín has a typical Romanesque exterior. The three-level façade shows the differing height of the nave and aisles of the interior; at the sides are two cylindrical bell towers. The transept is as high as the central nave. Horizontally, it does not exceed the aisles. In the crossing, the interior extends upward into an octagonal dome. The nave and the aisle, covered with barrel vaults, end with three apses.

  • At least in Spain all have studied the Church and the truth is that directly responds to what promises. It is restored, but without fanfare, maintaining the spirit of the original church. Perhaps without the altar and nothing figures are like in a Museum, but still, if it passes by is must-see. The euro and a half that is paid is worth.

  • It is a beautiful Romanesque church in a very pretty village. But he had already seen her photos since childhood in school textbooks and is exactly the same. Interesting history of the recovery of the ancient Church. Much more surprising was the visit to the Church of San Esteban, located very near, by the Flemish altarpieces recovered after being stolen by Eric the Belgian in the 1980s

  • The church should have been opened until 1:30, but when we arrived at 1 they were already closing, not giving explanations. Quite bad behaviour!
  • Perfect Romanesque church. Take your time to enjoy it.
  • Beautiful
  • St. Martin's Church in Frómista is the best example I've found maintenance of scrupulous respect for the original characteristics of Romanesque architecture and at the same time the very neat and modern lighting system to allow for the observation adequate truly outstanding sculptural details of the capitals and spaces in its interior. Care and cleaning seem to me very noticeable from of the gargoyles that surround the exterior of the apse and the ship of the entire building, free, on the other hand wired and common and unsightly Visual hindrance in other cases

  • It is a shame that by sealing the credential of the Santiago Pilgrim, charge a euro. Not for visiting the Church, only age by the label. To get the label have commanded us to the office of tourism 16-10-17 to 13:00 hours
