  • . A lovely, peaceful square - until the breaktime bell rings! The Plaza del Reloj is the Clock Square. You can see its tower from most places in Estepona - it's the round-topped tower. The pointed-topped tower is the church. It's where everyone gathers on New Year's Eve for the countdown to midnight, and the traditional Spanish custom of eating 12 grapes, one on each Boing! of the of the clock. Harder than you think, due to the risk of choking to death. :-) if you have any sense, you prepare the grapes beforehand by taking out the pips. And peeling them too, for smaller mouths. And on the chime of midnight, they let off the fireworks too. The square is rather cute. It has houses of different style all around, and a bandstand at one end. The Banda Municipal comes here to rehearse on occasions, as well as giving concerts. And of course, there is the clock tower itself, a handsome structure painted in white and dusty pink. It is generally said, although some disagree, that this was originally the minaret of the Estepona mosque (don't forget that the town was under Moorish rule for seven centuries). What is definitely known is that the round bit was added to the top in the 18th century. It's an attractive square, and a nice quiet, peaceful place to sit and ponder. Until 11.29 on weekdays in term time. :-) Because - you see that big building that joins the tower? Painted white and dusky pink? Guess what that is? It's the Centro de Educación Infantil y Primaria Simón Fernández. Yep, a primary school! A primary school? In the middle of the Old Town? Where's its playground? Yes - you've guessed it - the Plaza del Reloj is the school playground, and any minute now the children will come pouring out, while the harassed teachers will try to stop them running out of any of the four exits from the square. You can stay sitting on your bench if you want to see the young generation at play. Have a nice peaceful visit! .
  • From the village street, with archaeological remains, we climbed to the clock square, where we eat the grapes on December 31. It has a kiosk to the Municipal band where they give concerts in summer. With its trees and its typical houses. very pretty square.
