El Medano, El Medano
Categories: Beaches, Nature & Parks, Outdoor Activities
One of the best wind and kitesurfing locales in the world, the waters of El Medano are always decorated with sails. Watch them cut across the waves from one of the many cafes or restaurants in the town's main square, also a spot known for local fiestas. Between the town's two beaches is La Montaña Roja (The Red Mountain), a protected natural reserve with unusual volcanic origins. Around the base of the mountain, enjoy a walk or hike to see where indigenous plant life take advantage of the mineral-rich soil. Explore the many side streets of the old neighborhoods, then seek out a small cave that is near the edge of town. Hermano Pedro once used this cave for prayer and reflection; a small shrine has been placed inside to pay homage to the saint.
