Sinagoga, Cordoba

3.0
Visit Sinagoga to see one of the most well-preserved Jewish history sites in Spain. Located in Córdoba’s renowned Jewish Quarter, the 14th-century synagogue features Mudéjar-style plasterwork and detailing throughout the main hall, women’s area, and courtyard. Marvel at the three decorative arches that overlook the prayer room in the women’s gallery and the original Hebrew inscriptions that adorn the walls of the main hall. Relax for a few moments in the tranquil garden courtyard, enjoying the afternoon sun. The synagogue is free of charge but visiting hours are limited, so check the website before you go. • Small, but historical. They let folks inside in small groups, so expect a short wait in line. Not too much to see except the carvings of the old walls and some Hebrew writing. Original built in 1315 and is one of only 3 synagogues that survived to Inquisition. Signage is in Spanish and English. Free. Closed Mondays. Go if nearby and no huge line of tour groups, otherwise skip it.
  • If you are wandering around the old Jewish neighborhood, consider visiting this historic synagogue, one of the only surviving medieval ones left from the Inquisition. There are tastefully short English signs around, and the whole visit will not take more than 20 min for the most thorough tourists. Looking at the gorgeous Hebrew with geometric decorations similar to many Moorish buildings on the walls, you can't help but think of the peaceful coexistence that existed centuries ago.
  • Ramón, the archeologist guide blew mind away. He's concise and very afable. This place is a must for anyone trying to understand the history of Spain and of the Spanish people
  • Small, but free and nicely translated worship sentences / prayers on the walls.
  • It's interesting to see the history of the city. It's an easy walk

Where to stay in Cordoba

To experience the heart of Cordoba's old-world charm, the famous Jewish Quarter, or Judería, offers an array of family-owned pensions and boutique hotels with close proximity to the city's main attractions and lively tapas culture. A number of newer hotels surround the local train and bus stations offering more spacious accomodations, although removed from the city's historical district. Above all, be sure to book a hotel equipped with air conditioning as Cordoba is famous for its scorching tempuratures during the late spring and summer.
