Patios de Cordoba maintains an architectural heritage dating back to the city's Roman period. Ancient inhabitants realized that an inner courtyard featuring a fountain provided relief from the region's hot, dry climate. The Moors improved on the design by adding flowers to the courtyards. Numerous areas of Córdoba still display these courtyards as they were hundreds of years ago, but you'll find the largest concentration of them in the district of Alcázar Viejo. Many residents keep their courtyards open to the public, so pop into a few and admire the displays of colorful flowers spilling over the backdrop of white-walled houses.
