Museo Mezquita Catedral de Córdoba, Cordoba
(4.8/5 based on 15,000+ reviews on the web)
History meets beauty at Museo Mezquita Catedral de Córdoba, a rare blend of two religions. The massive mosque-turned-cathedral is famed for its "forest" of interior columns, topped with traditional Islamic red and white striped arches. Built in 786 by Moorish settlers, the structure was converted into a Christian church in 1236. Built over the course of nearly 250 years, the structure combines various architectural styles, with decorative elements ranging from elegant to gaudy. Despite the presence of the cathedral, which was added to the middle of the original structure in the 16th century, most of the mosque remains remarkably well preserved. Regarded as one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architecture, the site reminds visitors of the glory and importance Córdoba held in medieval times. • Along with the Alhambra, the mosque is the Summit of the expression of the art and architecture of the Muslim presence and Sephardic (Jewish), on the peninsula. You can see more than 822 columns of different materials including materials of previous Roman buildings. This world heritage site is a reflection of the religious and cultural history of what is now Spain, an amalgam of cultures, a route of different religions from Roman times. Muslims, Jews, and finally the Christians.

  • The name says it all: inside a Roman Catholic Cathedral (around a Jewish quarter) there is a Muslim mosque, can you imagine? This mixture of culture and architecture is a fantastic thing. The site has an energy of its own, only being in there, we can understand. The stained glass Windows, paintings, furniture, utensils, paintings, anyway, everything is beautiful. In the Catholic, are several chapels, each with its style. Is a visit not to be missed..
