Naveta des Tudons, Ciutadella

3.8
The Naveta d'Es Tudons, or Naveta of Es Tudons, is the most remarkable megalithic chamber tomb in the Balearic island of Menorca, Spain. It is located in the Western part of the island, on the Ciutadella de Menorca-Mahón road, approximately 3 miles out from Ciutadella, and 200 m south of the road. It stands on slightly rising ground in a sloping valley. Currently the Naveta d'Es Tudons is open to the public for visits . It is one of the main tourist attractions of Menorca.HistoryIn Menorca and Majorca there are several dozen habitational and funerary naveta complexes, some of which similarly comprise two storeys. Navetas (navetes in Menorquí) are chronologically pre-Talaiotic (i.e. prior to the Talaiotic age) constructions. Navetas were described in the early 19th century but not excavated until the 20th, notably during the 1960s and 1970s. Navetas were first given their name by the rather imaginative Dr Juan Ramis (1818) from their resemblance to upturned boats. The Naveta d'Es Tudons is the largest and best preserved funerary naveta in Menorca. The Naveta d'Es Tudons served as collective ossuary between 1200 and 750 BC. The lower chamber was for stashing the disarticulated bones of the dead after the flesh had been removed while the upper chamber was probably used for the drying of recently placed corpses. Radiocarbon dating of the bones found in the different funerary navetas in Menorca indicate a usage period between about 1130-820 BC, but the navetas like the Naveta d'Es Tudons are probably older. Pre-Talaiotic constructions are dated using an uncalibrated radiocarbon chronology from 1640 to 1400 BC. The navetas used for communal burial rituals are dated to the late second millennium and early first millennium BC.

  • We were amazed l see the Naveta des Tudons, not something like esperambamos. However disappointed that could not be entered into it, but truly is a marvel and is very well maintained. We liked it so much

  • This monument is a fantastic example of pre-Talaiotic Menorcan funerary architecture. I strongly suggest to visit it, even if that requires some planning to get there.
  • The oldest roofed construction in Europe
  • Interesting, Mondays are free
  • The Naveta des Tudons is a naveta of burial in the form of an inverted ship built around 1000 BC and is located in the municipality of Ciutadella de Menorca. Currently, is restored and the site is open to visitors by means of payment of entry from April to October. It is located on the place des Tudons, where it takes its name, and can be accessed by the road I-1 (Maó-Ciutadella) 40 km. This type of construction is typical of the age of the late bronze age, which corresponds to the end of the pre-Talayotic period in Minorca and the beginning of the Talayotic culture. These buildings were built using the cyclopean technique. The maximum dimensions are 13.50 to 6.40 m and the Chamber makes 7.45 to 2.45 m is accessed by a corridor with wedge-open to the West and presents, at the opposite side, an apsidal header.

  • The Lord of the door not only sells you the entrance but they very kindly tells you the history of the shuttle. Once in the Hall, little to do. Only the construction on the outside, and the ability to look inside through a hole. Unless you're archaeologist and enjoy a one of their stones, the visit of a person of a foot does not last more than five minutes, but it is worth. Price high but we should keep the heritage
