Lake Covadonga, Cangas de Onis
(4.7/5 based on 2,200+ reviews on the web)
Set in Spain’s oldest national park amongst mountains and green meadows lies Lake Covadonga, which is in fact two lakes. The first is Lake Enol, 1,070 m (3,510 ft) above sea level. Walk around the lake and look for free-roaming cows. Then set off to Lake Ercina, 1,108 m (3,635 ft) above sea level. Ambitious walkers can explore further from here, accessing more remote areas of the park. Refuel and rest weary legs in the cafe at this lake. Cars are not permitted to drive up to the lakes in the height of the tourist season, but a bus is available. Outside of tourist season, nervous drivers should opt for a tour bus or taxi, as the road is very winding and can get misty. • After seeing the chapel of covadonga, got to see the Lakes, skip it fatal what narrow which is to go by car because it is meaningless and super double right in slope, without fences or anything. You find goats, cows, sheep by half so have that go slowly Besides them cars, that when there are much people as that day to the upload... Although the views are so beautiful that deserves the penalty! That Yes, careful with the clutch to go in slope and lower braking that chilly one front that smelled burned longer because you have to go destabilised constantly that the car is packed.

  • -Glacial lakes located in the Asturian town of Cangas de Onís and framed within the National Park of the Picos de Europa, on the Asturian side. The main are two, the Enol Lake which is the largest and most profound (reaches up to 25 meters) and located at 1,070 meters of altitude and the Lake La Ercina, whose depth does not exceed 3 meters and located a little more elevated, 1.108 metres. There is also a third Lake, el Bricial Lake, which is smaller and only forms in the intervals of thaw. -To reach them by car, the most common route is from Cangas de Onis; so we must take the road towards Arenas de Cabrales and arriving at Soto de Cangas deviate towards Covadonga (where the Holy cave and Basilica are located) and before you arrive there a deviation leads us to the Lakes. It is a very sinuous road pending (but with good floor) especially in the sections known as La Huesera, this very pending but nearly straight, and the Mirador de la Reina (both very famous for the return to Spain cycling stages). At the beginning the road passes through a wooded area but then, where grows the descent, disappear trees giving way to a wide view of mountainous landscapes and meadows. It is not strange encounter on the way with animals on the road (as cows or horses; the latter was my case). After passing Mirador de la Reina will arrive at the Lake Enol (the first one) encased between a circus of mountains that surround it greatly and where you can stop, at the Parking of Buferrera, and take a look at the landscape. After 1, 5-2 Km from the Lake Enol arrive up to the Lake of the Ercina with several peaks far (snowy when I was) and that also has of parking, in addition to a small bar. -Little after pass the Lake Enol is arrives to the area of the Parking of Buferrera, where there was an old mine, in whose close by is located the center of visitors of the Park national of them peaks of Europe Pedro Pidal (closed of 15 of December to 15 of March) and of entry free where is can obtain information about the Park national , of the Lakes, and of possible activities to carry out, including routes walkers. Also in this area are the Mirador del Principe (with magnificent views) and the viewpoint of Interlaken. -Access to the Lakes can be freely at many times of the year can reach our drive up to them and aparacr in the enabled zones that exist. But in times of great affluence of visitors as holy week, the months of summer and some other access is restricted can be done only in public transport that is enabled for the occasion. I imagine that the restriction will affect only vehicles engine and not bikes, for example, but I'm not sure about that. The distance to the Lake Enol are 21 Km from Cangas de Onis and some 12 Km from Covadonga. Lake Enol GPS coordinates are: N 43.273807 and W 4.990202. -VISIT: visit to can be very different, obviously, both in the form of access (by car, bike, etc) and activities (simply contemplate the views of lakes, landscape, views of the viewpoints and sit there or well besides that routes walkers with varying degrees of requirement... Any of them will be undoubtedly highly satisfactory because the place and the environment is beautiful. Normally the done that leaves a nice day and, above all, clear (which is not easy) will contribute greatly to make the visit very good or outstanding. It must be remembered, that if it is not desired, visit to the Lakes not required to perform any physical effort (if in car of course) for travel on its close by so it is suitable for all over the world visit. -MY IMPRESSION: I've been in the Lakes on three occasions; the first two, years ago, not I caught very suitable for visiting days for one as well as being a little cloudy just raining significantly and the second was a day with such fog in lakes that were hardly seen. On my last visit, in January 2016, I was lucky to go on a day that there is usually no out there; completely cloudless, sunny and with over with pleasant temperature for that time; that allowed me to enjoy the views of the lakes and viewpoints in all its fullness and to top it off was a day during the week that there weren't people practically which allowed me to comfortably drive access all points that was possible and make one visit fabulous that it is unforgettable. It seems a great place, and a course, visit recomendadisima.
