Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, Candelaria

Religious Site · Historic Site
Over two centuries after a fire destroyed the church of Tenerife in 1789, Bishop Domingo Pérez Cáceres of Tenerife called for the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria to be built on its footprint. After being delayed by the economic crisis of 1931, World War II, and the Spanish Civil War, he finally commissioned architect Jose Enrique Marrero to design it in 1959. Its eclectic neo-Canarian style incorporates elements of various design styles historically used on the island. Dedicated to the patroness of the islands, the minor basilica draws over 2.5 million pilgrims every year. Inside, you'll find many bright murals depicting angels and saints devoted to the Virgin. The basilica stands on a square with many cafes ideal for sitting outside with a coffee and watching the world go by. • Just sit down a bit and feel the energy in the church. It is relaxing. Walking along the path is also nice. There are several fish restaurants where you can have lunch and dinner.  more »

  • Beautiful basilica, albeit only about 80 years old, but the story and history of the statue and its interaction with the Guanches (the original indigenous people of the Canaries) is fascinating. A...  more »
  • Beautiful piece of architecture with paintings of over 500 years old and counting. The outside square is as nice with some army guys walking around from time to time. Funny to see some ladies asking for money but them clothes were absolutely clean. There's a religious souvenir shop next to the entrance as well as on the way to the basilica itself. Not to miss for sure
  • Nice place, absolutely beautiful. I really wish my Spanish was better. This seems like the place where spanish folks holiday. Not felt more out of place, but that's my fault for not listening in Spanish class. Would recommend as its beautiful.
  • Absolutely beautiful place and is truly breathtaking when you step inside. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. If you come to the side doors and they are closed, look around and you will find the main entrance around the right hand side of coming from the town.
  • Stunning Basilica in a lovely little town. Well worth a visit and a walk around the town. Will definitely visit again. Very picturesque.
  • Beautiful Basilica, Mary statue and grounds. Great to see the original inhabitants honoured as well. The gift shops let the side down though - only a handful of the souvenirs actually look like the dark skinned Mary and Jesus the town was named after! What a shame.
