4.3/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web
Over two centuries after a fire destroyed the church of Tenerife in 1789, Bishop Domingo Pérez Cáceres of Tenerife called for the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria to be built on its footprint. After being delayed by the economic crisis of 1931, World War II, and the Spanish Civil War, he finally commissioned architect Jose Enrique Marrero to design it in 1959. Its eclectic neo-Canarian style incorporates elements of various design styles historically used on the island. Dedicated to the patroness of the islands, the minor basilica draws over 2.5 million pilgrims every year. Inside, you'll find many bright murals depicting angels and saints devoted to the Virgin. The basilica stands on a square with many cafes ideal for sitting outside with a coffee and watching the world go by. Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Candelaria Edition.
