Religious Site
Over two centuries after a fire destroyed the church of Tenerife in 1789, Bishop Domingo Pérez Cáceres of Tenerife called for the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria to be built on its footprint. After being delayed by the economic crisis of 1931, World War II, and the Spanish Civil War, he finally commissioned architect Jose Enrique Marrero to design it in 1959. Its eclectic neo-Canarian style incorporates elements of various design styles historically used on the island. Dedicated to the patroness of the islands, the minor basilica draws over 2.5 million pilgrims every year. Inside, you'll find many bright murals depicting angels and saints devoted to the Virgin. The basilica stands on a square with many cafes ideal for sitting outside with a coffee and watching the world go by. Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Candelaria Edition.

  • Candelaria is worth visiting it, parking free of charge one hour, an ice cream and visit to the Basilica. The square is pretty and the basilica if you pass by Candelaria must be seen.

  • Candelaria is a beautiful place if you go to the island you have to visit, and of course the basilica is impressive. If you come by car are lucky because there is a giant parking lot which always (except that to go on holidays) there is room to park right in front of the Cathedral. The entrance to the Cathedral is free.

  • Green sculptures along the edge of the Temple square. A spanish inscription into the Basilica: "no hagan fotos"
  • The basilica is in the center of Candalaria. We placed our car in the town centre and walked over there. You could also park next to the basilica however most spots are already taken. The basilica is worth visiting it looks beautiful on the inside.
  • Immense basilica looming a mysterious and sacred shore of Candelaria. After admiring the church itself, take a little walk to a cave with plenty of candles!
  • Ok
  • Needs to be seen
